Latics chief John Sheridan admitted a draw was the right result as his side battled to a deserved derby draw against Leeds United.

Leeds' Luciano Becchio headed an equaliser just two minutes after Latics' 17-goal leading scorer Lee Hughes beat Casper Ankergren with an angled shot.

Both sides battled hard throughout a scrappy clash played out live in front of the Sky Sports cameras, and Shez felt each team could take something from the game.

"I'm happy with the result and I think it was a fair one in the end," said Sheridan, whose side remain three points ahead of Simon Grayson's Leeds.

"Both teams battled and it was a typical derby in terms of work rate and effort - both of those were there throughout."

Hughes got on the scoresheet 51 minutes in, and Sheridan admitted he was disappointed that his players couldn't have held the lead a little longer.

"If we'd have done that I think we might have seen a totally different game," he added.  "But Greg [Fleming] made a good save towards the end and a point is fair overall.

"There was an excellent atmosphere in the ground tonight and the fans got right behind us.  Even though it isn't the win we wanted, this result could turn out to be a good one going forward."

The draw takes Athletic's points tally to four from two difficult games following the win at Millwall last Saturday - and Shez admitted he's pleased with the haul.

"I'd have settled for that before the Millwall game, and now we must kick on and try and get three more points on Saturday."
