Latics manager Dave Penney changed several aspects of his teams approach for this game, after seeing them frustrated by both Stockport and Carlisle in the opening two games of the season, to leave Brisbane Road with all three points.

Latics started with Pawel Abbott in a lone role up front, whilst Keigan Parker made up a midfield five with Chris Taylor, Jon Worthington, Dean Furman and Alex Marrow.

Athletic, utilising a 4-3-2-1 formation for the first time this season, took the lead after just 11 minutes. Abbott won the ball on the half way line and it dropped to Furman in the Latics Midfield.

He placed a neat through ball back to Abbott, finding the front man now in space behind the Orient midfield and with time to attack the goal.

As he reached the edge of the area Abbott struck a right footed effort that ricocheted off Ben Chorley in the Orient defence and fell back to him. This time he was not to be denied as he coolly smashed the rebound, left footed, past Orient 'keeper Jones.

Speaking exclusively to Latics Player after the game Abbott said "I hit it with my right and then it dropped on my left and I just hit it as hard as I could."

Abbott was quick to praise his team mates, saying: "When you score two you obviously get the media attention, however today was a team display.

"The lads defended very well, especially with 10-20 minutes - left as they pushed on."

Latics Player subscribers can see full interviews with Abbott, Andy Holdsworth and Manager Dave Penney early next week.

A needless foul by Holdsworth, playing at right back for Latics, brought the first yellow card of the game and a second Latics player saw yellow on 26 minutes. Peter Gilbert was harshly punished for a pull on Jarvis and as he attempted to block the quick free kick he was booked by Referee Scott.

Only a minute later the home side were level. A low, fast ball in to the six yard box from the Orient right was disastrously left by Captain Sean Gregan and Ryan Jarvis was able to tap the ball passed a stranded Brill in the Latics goal.

Speaking after the game Manager Penney said: "There was a miscommunication there and that's annoying. But we've spoken of it and we've put it right."

There were no changes for either side at half time, and on 57 minutes another mix-up between Gregan and Brill had Latics fans on the edge of their seat, whilst moments later fans were on the edge for an entirely different reason.

Gregan reacted to his misjudgement by lashing a clearance up the left wing, which found Taylor. He was able to play the overlapping Holdsworth in, only for him to be brought down just inside the 18 yard box by Sean Thornton.

When asked about the penalty decision, Holdsworth said: "I saw the ball bounce and attacked it; he just brought me down as I ran through. Thankfully Pav's stepped up and put it away."

The spot kick was placed high to the left of Jones by Abbott, to restore Athletics one goal lead on 58 minutes.

Latics Boss Penney told Latics Player: "There was not a lot wrong with the first two games, but goals change games" and Holdsworth was quick to agree with his Manager.

"Everybody worked hard and we deserved this for the two games we've not won" said the versatile Holdsworth, who spent the first half at right back and the second as part of a fluid 5-man midfield.

With 79 minutes gone manager Dave Penney made his first change, replacing Alex Marrow with Kelvin Lomax. Three minutes later he made his final two changes, this time replacing strikers Keigan Parker and Pawel Abbott with Darren Byfield and Danny Whitaker.

"It's great when you have the likes of Darren Byfield and Danny Whitaker to come on and change it." said Penny.

Athletic, in Taylor, Byfield, Whitaker and Lomax, played some outstanding possession football for the full four minutes of added time; to bring the game to a close without Orient having another effort on goal.

"I think we kept the ball well and they couldn't get close to us for much of the game, but that was exceptional, for sure."

Athletic will be delighted to head North following another positive and energetic performance. They can now look forward to their return to the Capital on Tuesday night, for their game against Millwall (K/O 7:45pm, commentary via Latics Player).
