Dean Brill's tremendous luminous orange shirt was the only thing dazzling about a contest that got bogged down for large stages, in front of 2,509 spectators at Brunton Park.
Latics Manager Dave Penney had made three changes from the side which faced Stockport on the opening day of the season. Penney introduced Chris O'Grady and Darren Byfield in place of Pawel Abbott and Keigan Parker in the Latics attack.
Speaking to Latics Player after the game, regarding the change, Penney said: "Pawel and Keigan had worked their socks off on a red hot day on Saturday and we just thought we'd freshen it up."
Latics other change saw on loan Alex Marrow replaced by Danny Whitaker in the starting line-up, after Blackburn Rovers decided they didn't want the youngster cup-tied.
The first effective attack of the contest came down the Carlisle left. Matty Robson, who troubled Athletic for the entire game, broke beyond Andy Holdsworth at Right Back and placed an inch perfect ball on to the head of Scott Dobie, the unmarked striker only able to place his header into the arms of Dean Brill in the Latics goal.
Despite Athletic looking the more composed side, Carlisle's breaking remained a threat.
Joe Anyinsah's run down the right for the home side forced Pete Gilbert to put the ball out for a corner on 37 minutes.
Ian Harte connected with the resulting ball in, with a thumping header, which hit the foot of the post and flew away to safety.
In a scrappy first half, just shaded by Athletic, 0-0 was perhaps a fair scoreline.
Penney was pleased with the sides early endeavours; "We had good first half possession, but didn't really create chances, which is frustrating.
"Defensively we looked ok and we put them under a lot of pressure, we just need more composure in the final third."
Much as Athletic started the first half, Carlisle started the second; Latics' unable to get a foothold in the game, or even leave their own half, in the first five minutes.
Two chances in two minute had Athletic flustered. With 53 minutes gone an incisive break down the Carlisle left by Robson allowed him to deliver a vicious low cross, which Jon Worthington stooped to clear, his header hitting the back of Sean Gregan and bouncing wide of the Latics goal.
Worthington was again first to react, when he smashed the resulting corner clear for Athletic under pressure from Dobie.
Dave Penney decided that his alternate strike pairing wasn't providing enough of a threat on 63 minutes and replaced both Darren Byfield & Chris O'Grady with Pawel Abbott & Keigan Parker, neither able to really impact on the game after coming on.
Danny Whitaker had to go off with a blooded head on 72 minutes, but speaking after the game Penney was not overly concerned: "Whit's is ok, he's had 5 stitches in his head but should train on Thursday."
On 84 minutes Carlisle wasted another golden opportunity to take the lead. An inch perfect cross from Tom Taiwo was headed over by the on rushing Scott Dobie.
However, he made amends for his miss with an equally easy header on 88 minutes. His run into the area was unchecked by Latics and he made simple work of heading home Raven's excellent cross.
Chris Taylor was replaced by Lewis Alessandra in injury time, the winger continuing to struggle with a niggling groin injury.
Penney said: "With Chris we have a bit of a worry, we'll have to keep assessing it, as it seems to settle down but as he tires it seems to cause him a problem."
The game ended with Latics unable to create any late chances, and Penney said: "The results a disappointment that's for sure. Now we have to look forward to a real test of where we're at with two tough away trips in the league."
