Manager Paul Dickov warns it is still early days after seeing his Latics side go top of the table in npower League One following an emphatic 3-0 home victory against Notts County.
Latics followed up their opening-day win at Tranmere with an impressive display to maintain a 100-per-cent start to the their league campaign.
Stunning strikes from Dean Furman, Oumare Tounkara and Kieran Lee made it a far from happy return to Boundary Park for Latics old boys Lee Hughes, Ben Burgess and John Thompson.
There was a word of caution from Dickov, however, who warned of the importance of ensuring feet remain firmly on the ground.
Dickov said: "We are delighted, but you have to remember we are only two league games into the season.
"The most pleasing thing today was not the three great goals we scored but the clean sheet we kept.
"We had to stop giving away silly goals and what impressed me was, even when we were 3-0 ahead, our determination not to let in a goal."
Dickov says he was unhappy with the first-half performance, but described their display in the second period as excellent.
The Latics manager was delighted with the quality of the goals, though he admitted he was puzzled how right-back Lee appeared in the County six-yard box to score the final one.
Dickov added he was also amazed how Furman found the net from 30-yards saying he was unable to hit the target in shooting practice all week.
He said: "They were three fantastic goals, but each came about from us keeping the ball once we won it back.
"When we won the ball back in the first half we were in a rush to do the next pass.
"We want to be on the front foot, give 100-per-cent and close down teams. Once we get the ball, though, we need to switch off, relax and pass it.
"We are still learning as I am. And though we are delighted, it is important we don't get carried away. It is a start, that's all."
These are heady days for Latics who scored three goals in a game for the first time in 64 matches, a sequence stretching back to February 2009.
Warren Feeney was ruled out through a groin strain picked up on international duty in midweek as Tounkara, who had recovered from the tight hamstring which ruled him out of the Carling Cup tie at Scunthorpe, joined Djeny Bembo-Leta as the strike pairing as Dean Kelly dropped down to the bench.
The other change came in the centre of defence where Reuben Hazell, rested in midweek, returned in place of Jean Yves M'voto.
Tounkara could have given Latics a dream start, a second-minute lead but failed to find the net with a free header from eight yards.
County hit back and Latics lived dangerously at times in the opening half when keeper Dean Brill had to make four decent saves, two apiece to deny Ben Davies and Ben Burgess.
The deadlock was broken just after the half-hour mark when Latics produced a marvellous move involving a series of first-touch passes and finishing with Furman finding the net with a spectacular shot from 30 yards.
It was his first goal for Latics in his 44th appearance, but what a way to get off the mark.
That goal lifted Latics who not long after could have doubled their advantage, but Lewis Alessandra shot narrowly wide.
Latics had to wait until midway through the second half before scoring their second, another stunning strike.
Lee hoisted a long pass forward and Tounkara found the net from right edge of the penalty area from an angle so tight you would never have imagined him to have found the net.
Again it was no ordinary goal for the Frenchman, who is on a season-long loan from Sunderland, and what a way to get off the mark for Latics. It was also his first strike in English football.
Latics made absolutely certain of victory with four minutes left with another peach of a goal.
Lee made a break from half way, played the ball out to Tounkara on the right and then raced into the penalty area to finish with the aplomb of a seasoned striker.
It was the perfect ending to a performance which provided further evidence to suggest Latics could have a season to remember for the right reasons as their fans headed for home in a jubilant mood.
