Alex Russell netted Northampton's winner to send Latics into League One's bottom four.

With the game seemingly one-way traffic, Latics fell behind to a quality strike from midfielder Alex Russell.  Russell had only come on as a substitute a minute earlier, but he lashed home an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area after being set up by Bradley Johnson.

John Sheridan threw on Mark Allott and Deane Smalley in response, but his side struggled to create anything of note, coming closest when Deane Smalley headed Ryan Bertrand's free kick over the bar.

At the other end Marlon Beresford saved well from Kirk and Gilligan, but Athletic couldn't create any further openings and slip to their fourth 1-0 home defeat of the season.
