MORE TRIBUTES POURING IN
More tributes have been pouring in following the death of Latics favourite Ernie Cooksey.
Ernie passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning following a battle against malignant melanoma. He was just 28 years old.
Cooksey made a total of 41 senior appearances for Athletic after signing for the club in August 2003. He eventually joined near neighbours Rochdale in September 2004.
A number of supporters - including fans from other clubs - have also laid shirts, scarves and flowers outside the ticket office. One Manchester City shirt reads 'Respect, from MCFC'.
Thoughts are with Ernie's family and friends for their extremely sad loss. Absolute legend who wore his heart on his sleeve. Tremendous memories Ernie, God Bless.
The Westons
I've supported Latics since the Fifties and the Ernie Cooksey passing away has truly hit me. l saw him play his first game and I admired his attitude and committment. A very nice young man has been taken away from us all. God bless his family and close friends.
Derek
I never knew Ernie the man but Ernie the footballer was a true inspiration. There have been a large number of players who have pulled on the Blue shirt in the last eighteen years while I've been watching Latics but Ernie is probably the hardest working one of the lot. Nobody has ever claimed that he was our most skillful player but for pure heart, he couldn't be beaten. I think his legacy is summed up by the fact that despite his relatively short stay at the club, he is known as just 'Ernie'. There are players who spend ten years plus at the club who would be referred to by their full name. Ernie has always been 'Ernie' and always will be. Rest In Peace Ernie.
Mark W
Sincere condolences to the greatest trier I ever saw at the Latics, no club could have asked for more than Ernie gave - a footballer's footballer.
Phil Laddin
Happy memories, gone but not forgotten. RIP Ernie.
The Millward Family
Living in Australia, I never had the privilege of seeing you play. However, the amount of respect and support for you and your family worldwide indicates you touched the hearts of so many. Onya Ernie, rest in peace.
Jeff Darch (Gold Coast)
Very sad news I used to hear Ernies name every Saturday on GMR Sport in breaks in the commentary games whilst listening to City and it sounded like there were 11 EC's on the field! I saw the clip on Channel M and the end bit is heartbreaking 'We all have dreams'. He was referring to getting back, sadly to no avail. Very sad news all the best Ernie lad RIP pal!
Dave (Manchester City fan)
Prince amongst men a much loved Latics Legend RIP.
Alec, Ryan, Luke and Ross Doolan
Thanks Ernie, the only REAL footballer and man I have ever seen play pro football, you played the way kids on the street play, not for money, fame or glory, but cos you loved the game. I'd rather pay to watch you play than any of the prima donnas in the Premiership. Thanks for the memories, and condolences to your family. I just hope I'm still around to see young Cooksey pull on a Latics shirt. RIP
Bryn McCabe
Everything written above echoed. I hold anyone who has played in a Latics shirt in the very highest regard, and to lose Ernie at such a young age, heartbreaking does not even come close. My heartfelt sympathies and wishes to his partner and family. If football heaven exists, show em how it is done Ernie, and rest in peace.
Cherry from Leicester
Ernie sadly missed one in a million .. your legacy will live on.. new stand should be renamed THE COOKSEY STAND a memory that will live forever.
Ziggy
I was devastated by the news of Ernie's passing away, having worked with Ernie during his time at Boundary Park, he loved what he was doing, gave 100% all the time, his enthusiasm rubbed off on everyone else during difficult times at the club. The fans loved him because he tried his best all the time, and he was such a modest person, and a bundle of nervous energy. To have his dream cut short at 28 is just so sad. Rest in Peace Ernie.
Martin Ogden
I am saddened to hear of the loss of a true Oldham legend. On the occasions that i had the privelege of meeting him , he was always very polite and welcoming and willing to take the time to talk to me and my two boys. Whatever the hurdles and challenges he faced on and off the pitch he always had a smile on his face. He will be a great loss to Oldham and the world of football. RIP COOKSEY.
Jason, Connor and Jordan Charlesworth (Oldham fans from Torquay)
My thoughts and wishes go out to ernie's family, especially to his unborn child. Maybe it would be a fitting tribute to have some part of the ground named after him! Ernie, you may be gone, but you will NEVER be forgotten. Safe journey my friend.
A Reilly
All at Bromley FC so sad to hear the news of Ernie. Most of you will never have seen him play down here at Bromley in the early days, and we all knew then that he would make it in the game somewhere, and we are so proud he did .Such a nice guy too, always wore that smile, but best remembered for tearing down the left flank at Hayes Lane. RIP.
Ian Pettyfer (Committee Member, Bromley FC)
Ernie Cooksey 'THE SPIRIT OF OLDHAM'. Ernie was what Oldham people are about a true battler, God bless Ernie, condolences to his family. Shirt number 40 for Ernie i reckon - 'THE SPIRIT OF OLDHAM'
Ivor John (Western Australia)
My mate brett a fellow Latics fan rang and gave me the sad news on Thursday night, i knew ernie had been poorly but this really shocked me, 28 was no age to go. Ernie was an instant hit with Latics fans when he joined in the summer of 2003, the friendly with Rochdale always sticks in my mind and ernie always put in 110 per cent every game he played. Me and my mate had a chat with him after one home game and he was a really nice lad, he will be sorely missed, a big loss to everyone not just in football but in general. My thoughts go out to Louise, his parents and the rest of his family and friends and all who knew him. RIP ERNIE.
Nigel, Paul & Brett (Oldham Fans in Bacup)
Ernie, You wern't the best player latics have ever had, infact you were "nothing more" than a 100% man. We live in an age where people wont put 100% in. Where people care about WAGS, cars and money rather than than giving their all. You were always one of the most loved by the fans, because you gave everything, 100% - that goes to show what you were as a man. "Nothing more" than a 100% man? I wouldn't have had it any other way. ERNIE FOR ENGLAND.
Ryan Hamer
I am a seasoned veteran of the highs and lows of being a Latics supporter, having watched them for over 54 years. Occasionally the reported death of a former player will provoke feelings of real sadness and reflections back to the time when they and the club were enjoying real success. This happened last year with Bert Lister. And farther back the deaths of Bobby Johnstone and Johnny Colquhoun. All of course part of the super team that blasted in goals for fun when winning promotion in 1963. But nothing in my memory gives cause for as much sadness as the death of Ernie. To be taken when so young and the father of an unborn baby is so tragic. We all loved his wholehearted approach and we've all loved the real tryer who may have had his limitations but played his heart out every time. Rather than a minute's silence, why don't we all spend the minute chanting 'Ernie' - particularly at Dale in the League Cup tie?
Paul Blackwell
A supporter's true footballer. I remember seeing Ernie supporting the Latics at Thurrock in the FA Cup after he had left the club. On the terraces with the fans. May you rest in peace, God bless you.
Chris Shallcross
Ernie was a man who truly deserves the tag of 'Latics Legend'. In his 41 appearances for the club he put as much heart and soul into every game as anyone has and anyone will do in the future. His ability to beat players 6" taller than him was unrivaled and at a time when we were at our lowest ebb he put a smile back on the supporters' faces. God bless you Ernie, rest in peace.
Dean Griffiths
RIP. Only saw you play a couple of times but the touching comments on here make me feel I have known you a lifetime.
Locky (Grays Athletic)
Sad end to a short life.
Kev & Sue
God bless you Ernie, what a gentleman a true man can ever be. Our condolences to your family. RIP Ernie.
Cocker Family
The word "legend" is probably overused these days- but even before the tragic events of the last few months unfolded - mention the name "Ernie Cooksey" and every Latics fan would have had his or her own fond memories of a man who truly was a legend and in one short year, represented everything that is still good in a game blighted with greed and lack of passion. Was it was the quaint 1950s name, his energy and commitment, his aerial ability or his obvious enjoyment at finally making it as a professional in the game he loved that won over the Latics faithful from day one? In truth, it was all these things and more - the club was in a desperate position in summer 2003 - players had left and it looked for a time as though the club we all love was going to the wall. Ernie joined and his enthusiasm was infectious - within weeks Benny Hill's novelty hit greeted him in the warm up whilst the Chaddy affectionately acknowledged him with the "Ernie for England" chant. Not forgetting some of the goals he scored - QPR , Bristol away - and especially the screamer at Grimsby on Boxing Day 2003 that would have graced any goal of the month award. A true legend in every sense - RIP Ernie.
Nigel Hutchinson
Tragic news, the supporters of Oldham Athletic have lost one of their 'family'. Our thoughts are with Ernie's family and friends.
Paul Savage
A true Latics legend now and forever. A gent always, RIP Ernie.
Mark B
All of the tributes to Ernie are 100% genuine and fully deserved for a player who gave 120% effort, committment and honest hard graft in EVERY game he played for Latics. Its just a shame we only had the pleasure of seeing him 41 times in the famous Blue shirt. When I heard the news yesterday I felt numb with shock and couldn't believe 'Our Ernie' had passed away! Gone but never forgotten! Ernie will ALWAYS have a special place in the heart of Latics fans! R.I.P Ernie!
Darryl Cornick
Words can't express feelings, RIP Ernie. All the greats go young, but when Shankly comes calling you've got to play for that Heaven XI. Our hearts go out to Louise and the family. Simply the best - 'Our Ern'
Andy
He definitely touched the hearts of the fans at Boundary Park, when times got rough he carried on and lifted the spirit of both the team and the faithful. We cannot have more respect for him. Ernie was a complete legend, committeed to what he did, and an all round gentleman. He will be greatly missed by all at Oldham, Rochdale and Grays Athletic.
For some footballers it takes half a season to be accepted by the fans, however Ernie won over the Latics crowd in just minutes. The determination he showed was phenomenal, and he will live on forever in our hearts. A great loss to many and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and all who knew him. Rest In Peace Ernie
Beth Longden
In all my 45 years of watching OAFC I have never known anyway make such a big impact with the fans in such a short space of time. Iain Dowie made a terrific signing when he got 'Our Ernie', now the Heaven XI manager has done the same. Fancy Dan footballers are ten a penny, real passionate grafters like Ernie come along once in a blue moon. This makes it harder to bear when we hear about his passing away. I am sure all Latics fans feel like they have lost a member of their family, I know I do. RIP Ernie.
Stephen Melia
A tragic loss to the football world, at least you will suffer no longer. RIP Ernie from all your Oldham Athletic friends based in Northern Ireland.
Alan Ferguson (Ballymoney, Northern Ireland)
Such a legendary player. There is no need to add anything more than that. Just a true Latics legend despite making only a few appearances. His effort and workrate was a blueprint that all players should follow. R.I.P. mate.
Sam James
At a time when the club was struggling, heads were down, and i was questioning my own faith in Oldham Athletic, in came Ernie Cooksey. He put a smile back on my face with the enthusiasm and passion that he gave to the Latics. Thank you Ernie, Rest In Peace.
Kia Lewis
So sorry to hear the truly tragic news, I hope all his family and friends can see the impact he made on so many people. We remember Ernie playing against us and having a very good game (Bristol City). My thoughts are with family and friends - R.I.P Ernie.
Matthew Say (Bristol City fan)
RIP Ernie, you were a true gentleman, you brought smiles back to Boundary Park when we needed them, thanks for the memories you will be sadly missed by Oldham, Rochdale and Grays, our deepest sympathy to his partner and family. Ernie For England.
Ratchford Family
So sad to hear that your'e not with us anymore Ernie. You were a top player and always bravely soldiered on. We last saw you at your benefit match at Latics in May 2008. You were admired and respected by everyone and your memory will go on forever. Love and condolences to all your family. There was only one Ernie Cooksey! God bless you always.
Diane Ratchford
A model professional and a player who didn't take his talent for granted but worked hard and gave 100% week in week out. Guess the big guy in sky needed to sign a hard working ball winner to run his midfield for him. RIP Ernie.
Sam Widdall
The very sad loss of Ernie, has rightly touched the hearts of Latics fans everywhere, because in an age when some greedy professional footballers, demand obscene amounts of money to play for their clubs, along comes a guy called Ernie Cooksey, who gives up his job and even takes a pay cut, to fulfil his dream of becoming a Professional Footballer. Then goes on to win the respect of the fans, of EVERY club he played for, because of his 100% commitment both on and off the field of play, to each and every one of those clubs. ERNIE, WE LATICS FANS LOVE YOU 'COS YOU'RE ONE OF US. Deepest Sympathy goes to Louise & all Ernie's Family & Friends.
John & Family
Ernie was a true gent who will be sadly missed and who touched the hearts of many Latics fans and just lived the dream. His effort, commitment and passion was what most players should look at these days. Always took time out to talk to the fans which was much appreciated and showed what a kind gentle man he was with a constant smile from ear to ear. Showed great battling spirit right til the very end. You will be sadly missed Ernie. Gone but never forgotten. Goodnight and God Bless. Heartbroken! RIP ERNIE.
Andy Oakes
What a legend Ernie was in his short time with us from the first game at Rochdale when everyone was asking who was this guy, he never stopped trying in his time at Boundary Park and he was just the same after his short move down the road, one on your own Ernie, RIP, Ernie for England, our thoughts are with your family and friends.
Waggon Inn Blues (Milnrow)
Ernie - you lived the dream and gave your absolute all when your opportunity came. A true role model. It is so sad that you have been taken when you should've been at your peak and enjoy life with your family. The world is a lesser place without you. Rest In Peace Ernie. My thoughts are with your family and friends.
Julian Taylor
We were so sorry to hear of the loss of Ernie. He wasn't at Latics for long and we were sad when he moved on. He was such a likeable character, who we took to immediately. We just loved his commitment as a player, it was obvious he loved his job. He was a credit to the sport and to lose his life at just 28 years of age makes it doubly sad.
Sue and John Hampson
Brought a tear to my eye. I'll always remember that friendly at Rochdale when the club were going through a extremely difficult time and Ernie played his heart out like any of our own fans would have done. He became a true hero from then onwards and always gave his all for the shirt. Can't believe this has happened, so undeserved. Rest In Peace Ernie.
Paul Turner
RIP Ernie. The biggest tribute we can give you is going up this season - RIP mate, you will be sadly missed by every one at Latics and our opponents.
Marc Ingham
RIP Ernie. Many condolonces to Family. A sad loss to a sport full of overpaid, overhyped prima-donnas. Ernie was one of the few exceptions.
Emma & Paul
I hope Ernie took, and his family can take, some kind of comfort with the knowledge of how highly he was regarded at our club and his others. My thoughts are with them at this time. RIP.
Todd Gane
RIP Ernie, you're a true hero, and gave us everything you had. We'll always be grateful and remember you. Legend. I am devastated. My thoughts are with your family and friends.
Mark Harrison
A very sad day for all who where touched by Ernies passion, not just for football but for everything in his life. Ernie you are a true Latics Legend. RIP Ernie. Ernie For England.
Adrian Kennedy
God bless Ernie. Sad day at Boundary Park, the loss of such a great player RIP Ernie.
Steve Allen
I will have your name put on my shirt next time I pass BP. All our thoughts are with you and your family.Good Night and God Bless.
Peter Ward
I was so, so sorry to hear this devastating news about 'Our' Ernie. My deepest sympathies to his friends and family. Ernie, you lived our dream. You were one of us who got the chance to play professionally, and you grasped that chance with both hands and gave it everything you had every time you crossed the white line. A true inspiration.
Richard Jeffery
In the days of multi-million pound signings, supercar footballers and greedy agents, along came a working class man, who nobody knew. Within minutes he became "Our Ernie!" A man with more heart and determination than these so called footballers, and loved by not only Oldham and Rochdale, but by fans who watched him and admired his enthusiasm. Crying is not a male pastime, but there will have been many who would have shed a tear upon hearing the tragic news about Ernie. My thoughts go out to Louise and his family, especially his unborn child. To a true working class hero, Our Ernie.
John Beard
Rest in peace Ernie, you will be missed.
The Healeys
I would like to pass my condolences onto Ernie's family, he will be missed so much by all his fans. I went to the testimonial match and it was very emotional and amazing to see Ernie back at Boundary Park. He is an amazing person, so nice and will be sadly missed. xxxx
Lisa Roberts
Ernie was no superstar and he didnt think he was either, but what he lacked in ability he more than made up for in desire, willingness and above all else ENTHUSIASM and COMMITMENT. Long gone are the days where footballers play for enjoyment and relish the opportunity in many ways, that mostly luck has given, whereas Ernie did and enjoyed it...and you could tell. As a true Oldham fan, we will never be world beaters but give me 11 or even 5 Ernie Cookseys grafting, getting stuck in for 90 miniutes, winning a few and losing a few, than part-time superstars of the past, present and future, who give a bit but take a lot more. Ernie gave me real value for my money....and is in many ways the working mans footballer. Best wishes to Ernie in footballing heaven, playing for a world 11..and putting up the nets. RIP and thanks.
Nigel Lenegan
rest in peace Ernie. Was an absolute 100% trier...and thats what Latics fans love. Always a gent. It was a very sad day yesterday but I'm thinking of his good times now, another one of the good guys falls away. Enjoy the great football game in the sky mate, and keep smiling down on your family. We can never forget.
John Walch
A tragic loss from such a cruel disease. My sincere condolences and best wishes to Ernie's family. Ernie will not be forgotten.
Matt Rosebury
Never in my 30+ years of supporting Latics has anyone made an impact in such a short time as Ernie did, not just here but at Dale and Grays. This speaks leaps and bounds about the character, the charisma and the likeability factor that Ernie portrayed wherever he went. Although times like these question my faith, I am certain Heaven F.C have a new no 4. God bless you Ernie and God bless your family and friends. KEEP THE FAITH.
Daron Jackson
Our thoughts go out to the family of Ernie at this sad time. Rest In Peace.
Dan, Sarah & Kieran Corbishley
Sincerest condolences to Ernie's family and friends. A brave man with a brave heart. He will never be forgotten by anyone who's life he touched, and his enthusiasm spread like ripples in a pond. RIP.
Jeni & Paul Snoddy
Tragic news, its no age to leave us. A solid professional full of enthusiasm for the game, always gave his best whenever I saw him. My thoughts are with his family, RIP Cooksey the football family will miss you.

My condolences on the passing of Ernie Cooksey. Very sad and a great loss at such a young age. My thoughts are with his family and friends. RIP.
Brian Carey (Crystal Palace fan)
Really sorry to hear this, hoped Ernie would recover, or more realistically see the birth of his child. I hope he passed without pain and my condolences go to his family and friends. Thank you Ernie.
Scott Thompson
Sleep peacefully our Ernie. Can't believe we're saying goodbye. Hope you've teamed up with the other legends at Heaven's Wembley in the sky. We will remember all the good times, the headers and big smiles. We send our love to all your family deepest sympathy across the miles. So God bless you Ernie Cooksey - a legend and a blue a strong and brave little battler is how we'll remember you.
Ian, Nina & Corey Fairweather
I will never forget Ernie's debut when he ran himself to a standstill in the friendly at Rochdale. After being substituted to a standing ovation he came back on later and did it again! Unforgettable! It is a tragedy that Ernie died so young and without seeing his child, but it is fantastic that he lived the dream that so many of us wish we could - being a pro footballer. The fact that he took a pay cut to live his dream puts some money-grabbing players to shame. He will never appear in an all time great Latics XI, but he would be the first name on the all-time Latics triers XI. RIP Ernie - you will always be fondly remembered and never forgotten at Boundary Park.
Bolty
Forget 'Ernie for England'. There's only one team good enough for nice guys like Ernie to play for - Ernie for Heaven XI. My thoughts are with his family.
Colin Lister
Just one of those likeable guys! Came from another part of the country and gave 200% in the Latics shirt. 28 years old, a legend, and an absolute tragedy.
Ian Fairweather
A very sad day for all those who had been blessed by Ernie's presence. You will be remembered always. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family - it's so cruel. Thanks for the memories and I hope you are at peace in heaven.
Dave Walker
I am absolutely devastated at the news of Ernie Cooksey passing away. The man is a true Latics legend and will be sorely missed by everyone. For his committed performances alone, he is up at the top of the list of my all time favourite players. I'll never forget the vital goals he scored for our club and the way he could climb for a header was simply unrivalled. His first game for the club away at Rochdale in a friendly match was great to watch because of the drive and passion of one person alone - Ernie Cooksey. Ernie for England! My thoughts are with his family at this tragic time and the sad loss of a great individual who always played with a smile on his face and simply for the love of the game. So young to die, it is extremely heart-wrenching to lose such an inspirational man. OAFC should do something in remembrance of Ernie, the player that the fans loved. I am not alone in my sadness tonight. There's only one Ernie Cooksey! A true inspiration to us all. RIP Ernie.
John Mellor
Today is a sad day for anyone whoever had the pleasure of cheering on Ernie from the terraces, a man who wore his heart on his sleeve, a model that any young player would do well to base themselves on. Rest in peace Ernie, I am sure your spirit will live on in your child, My heart goes out to your partner and family.
Rob Tagg
What a sad sad loss to this world. I will always remember the last time I saw this bloke at the game which turned out to be a send-off. Something surely should be put in memory off him. An Ernie Cooksey Stand? He will be sadly missed.
McAndrew Family
What a sad day! RIP Ernie, my thoughts are with his family. What a great pro,he always gave 110%, even when the future of Latics was very bleak! Will always be remembered whereever he played. One Ernie Cooksey!!! What about the COOKSEY BAR in the Rochdale Road End?
Rob Battye
This is one of the saddest occasions I can remember in all the 40+ years I have supported Oldham. It is remarkable how popular Ernie became in such a short time at the club. I think this is partly because he brought back to Boundary Park a quality which is sadly scarce in today's game - passion. He played every game with 100% commitment but encapsulated the spirit of the game by doing so with a smile on his face. I believe it was his passion which started the 'Earnie for England' tease which created a great bond between the player and fans. I would request that we have a minutes silence at the Rochdale game, rather than the applause, as it feels more respectful and fitting for this occasion. I have no doubts the sadness felt be Latics fans is shared by our near neighbours who turned up in good numbers to Ernie's game. My heart goes out to his family and girlfriend for their great loss.
Ray Jones
Heard the news for the first time, I went to the tribute match and can't believe he's gone. Gone but never forgotten, his soul lives on through his goals.
John White
You were a great player for the club and you never stopped working on the pitch. You can play the game that you love up in heaven mate. Rest In Peace.
Kurt Andrew
Thoughts are with his partner, family and friends at this sad time. The memories of him will always live on at Boundary Park, no-one deserves to go through what he went through once, let alone twice. RIP Ernie xxx
Colette Lees
My condolences go out to Ernie's family and expectant partner. Such a young age to lose your life but in his short spell at Latics he had a huge impact with the fans, always gave 110% and will always be remembered by those that watched him play. RIP Ernie.
Steve Ratcliffe
RIP Ernie, my thoughts are with your family in their time of need. Hopefully both clubs can mark the forthcoming game together in the Cup to commemorate your footballing life. Thanks for the memories Ernie, hope you enjoy the big Boundary Park in the sky.
Damian
What terrible news for his pregnant partner and family. I only saw Ernie on Sky matches but he was a terrier and a wholehearted player. He was one of the few players who haven't turned pro at colchester to return to League football. RIP Ernie.
Danny Coghill (Colchester United fan)
Ernie was a true battler both on and off the football field. He always gave his best and will always be remembered by true Oldham fans. My heart goes out to his wife and family, but at least they will know that Oldham fans will never forget his efforts and can feel proud of his achievements. God bless you Ernie.
Steve Partington
Shocked and saddened by the news of Ernie's passing. He played for Latics during the dark days of the club and always gave his all. Thoughts and sympathy go to the family.
Gareth (Newtown)
From the very first moment I watched him in his debut at Rochdale, I knew he was one of the very few 110 percenters, my thoughts are with his family. Ernie, your memory will live forever with Latics fans and your name forever chanted.
Stalybridge Mike
We are deeply saddened by the news of Ernie's passing. Always 100% effort and commitment which ensured Ernie was always respected and seen as ' one of us' by fans of all the clubs he played for. This was confirmed by the amount of Boston fans who made the long trip to the fundraising game at Boundary Park. We will fondly remember his flying headers and his last penalty. Our sincere condolences to his family & friends at this sad and difficult time.
Geoff & Tracy Perks
A sad day, the workhorse has been laid to rest. An excellent all-heart player who gave his all for every club he went to. We should name a stand after him.

This is such sad news. Ernie will always have a special place in the hearts of all Latics fans. He was an all round committed player who never gave less than 100% and it is tragic that he has lost the greatest battle of all. Deepest and sincere condolences to Ernie's family and all who knew him.
Pete Davis
I am very sorry to here about Ernie. Not long on this earth or with Latics, but the man give 100% in every game he played for us. Absolute and sincere condolences to his family. RIP Ernie, one of the best.
Gary Everitt
Sad loss to the game, will always be rememberd for his fighting spirit. My thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. RIP Ernie - Gone but never to be forgotten.

Peter Kennedy
This is a sad day. My thoughts are with Ernie's family - there will only ever be one Ernie Cooksey.
Turner1974
An absolute legend amongst the Latics faithful, Ernie was a player that every fan adored for his 110% commitment. He was the type of player you could depend on in any circumstances during a game. There will surely be an emotional tribute to Ernie when Latics play Rochdale in the Cup. RIP Ernie, God bless you mate.
Frank
Such an impact in such a short time. Your energy and passion playing for us will never be forgotten by anyone who watched you play and to top it off a nice bloke as well. Rest in peace Ernie.
Chris Aspin
What a sad day for football today is with the passing of Ernie Cooksey, what a superb charecter and inspiration he was. The way he played every game is a shining light to anyone in any job - enjoy it, get on with it and do your very best. I hope that Latics fans remember Ernie for a very long time because to me he summed up what Latics and their fans are all about - WE ARE ALL TRIERS AND PROUD OF IT.
Graham Anderson
Our deepest sympathy to Ernie's partner & family our thoughts are with you at this very sad time. Ernie is with the other great legends now and I'm sure he will make the first eleven up there. RIP mate from all of us.
The Doyle family ( Royton)
I also had the pleasure of watching Ernie play. My thoughts and prayers are with Ernie, his family, friends and girlfriend. RIP Ernie.
Paul from Preston
For me, Ernie was a beacon of hope and optimism who came to Latics during some of our very darkest days. His attitude and enthusiasm made him an instant hit with every Latics fan I know. A 'legend' in the true sense of the word. Today is a sad, sad day, made all the more tragic by the fact that he was so close to becoming a father for the first time. The world is a poorer place for having lost a man like Ernie Cooksey. Sincere condolences to his family and those closest to him.
Dan H
Ernie Cooksey had a heart of a lion, he knew were he had come from and grasped his opportunity with both hands. His endeavour and attitude are a great example to all those aspiring to become professional footballers. Never give up believing in yourself. Rest In Peace.
Brian T Hilton
We will never forget you Ernie. Condolences to your family, RIP to a true Latics legend.
Dave & Alison Gaskell
What a sad sad loss to Oldham Rochdale and Grays but most of all football. I don't think there was a more genuine person than Ernie out there. My thoughts are with Ernie and his family and hope they can pull through this awful time, RIP Our Ernie.
Ryan Williams
Rest in Peace Ernie. One player who I can say would put his all into every game and was one of the biggest hits with the fans in recent history. He was a very dedicated man and is an ideal role model to the younger generation, coming from being a builder and following his dream into football. Its such a shame the dream has been cut short by cancer, but in his 28 years I am sure he has brought happiness to many people. RIP.
Steve Ashforth
Just wanted to pass on my sincere condolences to Ernie's family after hearing this desperately sad news. Can't really add anything more to the eloquent and touching tributes already posted on this page, other than to say 'you'll never walk alone' and RIP.
Sean Cummins (Liverpool fan)
Just heard the news, its a black day for all blues. Ernie you touched the hearts of all Latics fans with your spirit and efforts at a time when the club itself was battling for its own life. My thoughts are with your family, I lost my Dad to the big C but he and my Grandad will make you welcome in Latics heaven. My partner too is also expecting our second baby on Monday, I can't imagine what your family is going through at what should be a time of joy and happiness for you and them. How can life be so cruel that your child will never see just what a great bloke you were? With the help of all Latics fans lets make sure that you will never be forgotten. Rest In Peace.

Top guy, top player. I remember him waving to the fans whilst on the ball! How many players do that? Sad day.
Wayne Murphy
Epitomised everything Latics are about. Was great with the fans and despite not being at the club for a long time, his name will be mentioned in the stands for many, many years to come.

What a sad, sad day. Ernie made an instant impact on me and my friends as he played like a supporter would play. His enthusiasm and energy were amazing and he will long be remembered. My sincere condolences go out to his family and loved ones. Ernie For England.

A sad day for the club and football in general. I remember going to Chasetown in the FA Cup a few years back where Ernie was stood on the terrace supporting the Latics, even though he had left the club. A top bloke who will be sadly missed. My thoughts are with his family.
Stuart Hartley
Thoughts are with his family. Not a Latics fan, but no age at all to go. RIP Cooksey.
Ian Lodge (Barnsley fan)
Ernie was a Latics legend, his passing is very sad to hear. Never have I seen such a dedicated player on the pitch. This awful disease has taken a man in the prime of his life. Ernie and his family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Ernie was a great player for Oldham and Rochdale. The fans loved him at every club he played for. It's tragic that he has lost his battle with cancer. My heart goes out to his friends and family. He was a true legend and a great example to all players. Let's hope that both Oldham and Rochdale can make their seasons one to remember for Ernie. RIP Ernie and thanks.

Ernie gave Latics fans something to smile about during a difficult period for the club. He raised the fans heads with his heart and determination. He was a player truly fitting of wearing a Latics shirt. I'll never forget his equaliser against QPR which inspired us to go on and win the match. Rest well Ernie, thank you for such fond memories. You won't be forgotten.

So sorry to hear your passing. Hopefully now you can find peace,

A truly sad day. I think everyone would agree Ernie wasnt the most technically-gifted player but he was strong, resilient and had a huge heart. I will never forget the way he would rise above the tallest man on the field to head home. I think that it is a good way to describe Ernie - the man that rose above better players because he wanted it the most. Ernie you will be missed.

RIP Ernie. Sincere condolances to Ernie's family and especially his pregnant girlfriend - terrible, terrible news.

I was deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Ernie Cooksey. Ernie was one of very few real professionals left in football today. It is a massive loss of Grays, Rochdale, Latics, and football in general. In the games up to Rochdale away i will be sporting a black armband during every game, and i hope all other fans and players will join me in doing so.
Liam McMahon
It's a sad day for the football world, at least you will suffer no longer. RIP Ernie from all your Oldham Athletic friends based in Northern Ireland.
Alan Ferguson
RIP Ernie, God bless. Something to raise awarness of the condition he suffered from should be arranged for the Rochdale game. Thoughts go out to his family, a sad day for football.

Life can be so unfair sometimes, a young man with everything to live for cut down in this prime. Unfortunately this horrible disease is no respecter of personal circumstances and takes those least deserving of such a fate. Your spirit will live on through your child and in the hearts of those who loved you and held you dear. I'm sure your memory will often blow on the breeze of a cold Boundary Park day. Remember Ernie, only the good die die young. Good Night God Bless mate, your immortality will amongst Latics fans will reign forever. RIP.
Paul Prendergast
So sad to hear about the passing this morning of Ernie. I can count on one hand, the amount of players that I hold that much affection in my heart as I had for him. A player who never had top-class skill, nor ability, but had world-class enthusiasm and effort. I just know he's given his absolute all in his brave battle, but it was just too much even for Ernie. This simply is a massively sad day. I hope the club can do something to honour what was a real cult hero to everyone.

Ernie arrived in the darkest days of Latics recent history. Not the most gifted but his all action game and commitment was just what we needed at the time which is why he was so popular with the fans. Yes, another dark day in Latics' recent history but let's remember the attitude of such as Ernie is the reason our club came through! Thanks Ernie.
Robert Wild
God bless you Ernie, you fought a battle with true yard-dog spirit when the club was on it's knees, I'll never forget that. I've had the pleasure to of met you on a few occasions, such a nice guy. Your legacy lives on! You're in my heart, you're in my soul. One Ernie Cooksey!
