LATICS FACE TOUGH ROSES TEST

Posted on: Fri 15 Aug 2008

Latics travel to Elland Road tomorrow looking to put one over on Roses rivals Leeds United.

Athletic caused a sensation by seeing off United by a 3-1 scoreline in Yorkshire last season, and John Sheridan's men will be hoping for a repeat dose.

Dennis Wise left shortly afterwards to be replaced by Gary McAllister, who led Leeds into the play-offs in spite of their 15-point deduction.

Local boy Jonathan Howson was the hero as Leeds saw off Carlisle in the semis to set up a Wembley showpiece clash with rivals Doncaster.

Despite the Whites being installed as hot favourites to win the game, James Hayter's 48th-minute goal took Sean O'Driscoll's men into the Championship instead.

Down but not out, Leeds' sights will be firmly set on promotion this season and they are favourites in the bookies' eyes.

With new signing Andy Robinson in the ranks and quality in all areas of the pitch, John Sheridan's old team will doubtless pose a potent threat.

They came from behind to win at Scunthorpe on the opening day thanks to Jermaine Beckford's winner ten minutes from time.

And Beckford netted a hat-trick as Chester were brushed aside 5-2 in the Carling Cup in midweek.

But Athletic will go into the game with confidence of their own after reversing a 3-1 deficit to beat Millwall 4-3 at Boundary Park on the opening day.

That superb turnaround was followed by a 0-0 draw at Rochdale in the Carling Cup, with victory eventually coming via a penalty shoot-out.

Manager John Sheridan will have yet another selection headache with both Kevin Maher and Kelvin Lomax coming back into the squad following injury.

John Thompson and JP Kalala are also included, but Matty Wolfenden and Kieran Lee both miss out.

Meanwhile, Craig Davies serves the first game of a three-match ban after being sent off in midweek.

Deane Smalley and Andy Liddell will battle for a place on the right after the former impressed against Rochdale.

Lewis Alessandra also pressed his claim to take Davies' place after featuring as a substitute at Spotland.

Leeds boss McAllister is likely to be without striker Robert Snodgrass through injury, but David Prutton and Enoch Showunmi have shaken off knocks and should figure.

Latics (from): Crossley, Eardley, Maher, Kalala, Thompson, Stam, Whitaker, Allott, Hughes, Davies, O'Grady, Lomax, Fleming, Hazell, Gregan, Taylor, Stephens, Liddell, Smalley, Alessandra.
