Latics head to Burnley tonight on a Carling Cup revenge mission following defeat at the same stage last year.

Goals from Andy Gray, Robbie Blake and Adi Akinbiyi gave the Clarets a 3-0 win last time around - rough justice on a Latics side who bossed the game for long spells.

But boss John Sheridan will be hoping he can get his own back tonight - although he will be wary of the threat posed by Owen Coyle's wounded side.

Burnley have yet to win a game in the League, and lost heavily at Sheffield Wednesday and at home to Ipswich before picking up their first point of the campaign courtesy of a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace last weekend.

They qualified for the second stage following a 2-0 win at Bury, with ex-Scunthorpe man Martin Paterson scoring both goals.

Meanwhile Athletic top League One following three wins from their opening three League games, plus a penalty shoot-out win over near neighbours Rochdale.

A Latics win at Turf Moor tonight would not only avenge for last season's defeat, it would also end a jinx stretching back almost 26 years.

For Athletic haven't tasted victory at Burnley in five attempts since their last triumph at Turf Moor - a 2-1 win all the way back in October 1982.

Indeed, Latics haven't beaten the Clarets since a 3-0 win at Boundary Park early in the 1994/95 season.

Manager John Sheridan has already stated he is set to change things around tonight, with a number of slots up for grabs.

Senior players Mark Crossley, Sean Gregan and Lee Hughes may all be rested with one eye on Saturday's big League One clash at Colchester.

Stefan Stam and Chris O'Grady could step in, while keeper Greg Fleming looks set to take over from Crossley between the sticks.

Matty Wolfenden (thigh) is the only senior player who remains on the sidelines through injury - meaning competition for places remains high with several substitute spots also available.

Craig Davies serves the final game of a three-match ban following his sending-off at Rochdale in the last round.

Burnley boss Coyle has no new injury worries but could introduce a number of faces back into the starting side as he assesses different options within his squad.

Latics (from): Crossley, Eardley, Kalala, Thompson, Maher, Stam, Whitaker, Allott, Hughes, O'Grady, Lomax, Fleming, Hazell, Gregan, Taylor, Lee, Stephens, Liddell, Smalley, Alessandra.
