CHAPEL ROAD BASE EARMARKED?
Latics' Chapel Road training ground could be earmarked for redevelopment after Oldham Council revealed plans to build a new academy school in the borough.
Chapel Road is one of a number of sites under consideration, though any move would undoubtedly be complicated by the club's status as long-term tenants.
Athletic hold a 99-year lease on the site, and have invested a significant amount of money in high quality pitches, changing accommodation and car parking.
Council leader Cllr Howard Sykes has revealed that a number of sites are under consideration, with further details to be revealed next week.
The borough plans to build two new academies under the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) project, worth approximately £230million.
Cllr Sykes told the Oldham Evening Chronicle: "We are in talks with Oldham Athletic and someone else about another site.
"The situation is complicated but we have to get the right site for the school, and it is not the only place we are looking."
Athletic's chief executive Alan Hardy underlined the fact that the club are already well-established tenants at Chapel Road.
"Chapel Road is an excellent training facility," he said.
"Obviously we would not want to stand in the council's way of bringing £200million into the borough, if an alternative site cannot be found.
"It is too early to say if there will be new facilities and a new site.
"We have a very, very long lease and have invested a lot of money into two training pitches, a new changing room block and car parking."
