CROSSLEY HOPING FOR CUP BOOST
Mark Crossley isn't ready to turn his back on the FA Cup just yet after building one of the finest Cup goalkeeping pedigrees ever.
The Welsh international remains just one of two goalkeepers - Dave Beasant is the other - to save a penalty in an FA Cup Final.
World TV: Cup veteran gets ready to go again
Crossley wrote himself into the record books back in 1991 when he kept out Gary Lineker's spot-kick in the Wembley showpiece, although his Nottingham Forest side went on to lose the game.
Latics head to Cheltenham tomorrow as this season's competition gets underway, and the veteran is dreaming of masterminding more great Cup memories.
Crossley may be a member of a select band of players to have played in a Final, but he rates another more recent event as one of the his best achievements.
"Well after 20 years I should have some memories really, shouldn't I?" he joked.
"The FA Cup has given me a lot of good times, none more so than with this football club when we went to Everton and won last season.
"It'd be nice to taste some more of that, but we are facing a really tough game at Cheltenham [on Saturday]. Hopefully we can get through, get to the third round and draw a big team like last season."
But Crossley knows qualification for the next stage won't come easy against a Robins side who look a much tougher nut to crack under new gaffer Martin Allen.
"We know Cheltenham like to get the ball forward quickly; they are a strong side and we will have to deal with that. We have to make sure we get out there and do the business.
"It will be a difficult game - but we will try to replicate the performance we gave against Scunthorpe and hopefully we will come away with the right result."
