Latics were on a revenge mission against Stockport last weekend - but they'll have to guard against another backlash tonight when Scunthorpe welcome John Sheridan's side to Glanford Park (KO 7.30pm).
Striker Paul Hayes has already uttered the word 'revenge' in the build-up to the game following Latics' 3-0 victory at Boundary Park earlier in the season.
United travelled west with a three-point lead at the top of the table following a 3-2 win over Millwall, but they endured a night to forget in Oldham as Lewis Alessandra fired his first senior hat-trick.
But Adkins and his men have vowed to make tonight's game a different proposition, while the visitors go into the game on a high after an impressive 3-1 win over play-off challengers Stockport.
All in all, it makes for an intruiging clash as two competitive sides jockey for position in the play-off pack.
League One champions in 2006/07, Scunthorpe battled valiantly in the Championship last season but were unable to prevent a quick return to the third tier.
The new season kicked off with defeats to Leeds and Walsall, but a run of nine victories from the next 11 games pushed Scunny into the top two before defeat at Boundary Park.
Form has generally been good since, and indeed Nigel Adkins' men have lost just four League games since, giving them a total tally of 47 points from 26 games, good enough for 5th position just a single point behind third-placed Athletic.
Home form has been particularly strong, with seven wins and three draws garnered from 12 outings. Aside from the opening-day defeat to Leeds, current leaders Leicester are the only other side to triumph at Glanford Park in the League this seeason.
Scunthorpe are prolific scorers on their own patch, bagging 26 goals while conceding just 16 times at the other end. Highly-rated frontman Gary Hooper leads the scoring charts with 18 strikes, closely followed by 14-goal hitman Hayes.
Adkins' side kept up the pressure on the top two with a 2-1 home win over Leyton Orient on Saturday courtesy of goals from Hayes and Garry Thompson.
The Iron are also going well in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, and are in the driving seat for a lucrative place at Wembley following a 2-0 win over Rotherham United in the first leg of the Northern Area Final last week.
Latics manager John Sheridan welcomes back Neal Eardley following a one-match ban and the Wales international will challenge Kelvin Lomax for the right back spot.
Mark Crossley (back) remains on the sidelines as he continues to recover from surgery, while a knock is keeping Matty Wolfenden out. Dale Stephens is back in training following a knock but has not been included in the matchday squad.
Scunthorpe defender Marcus Williams (toe) is definitely out and Andrew Wright and Michael Lea will battle for the vacant spot in the back four.
Latics will take to the field in their fluo yellow away kit tonight.
