SHERIDAN UP FOR TELEVISED TEST

Posted on: Fri 06 Feb 2009

John Sheridan has challenged his players to rise to the occasion and pull off a big result live on Sky this weekend.

Latics go into action at the irregular time of 5.20pm tomorrow against runaway leaders Leicester City live in front of an international TV audience.

Nigel Pearson's Foxes have dominated the division so far and haven't tasted a league defeat since October 28.

In-form City go into the game as favourites, but Sheridan feels he has the quality in his camp to potentially pull off a result on Latics' first visit to the Walkers Stadium.

He said: "This is a good game for us against a Leicester side who have proved they are the best in the league by winning a lot of games.

"We have done well at the big grounds since I've been here and for some reason we tend to save our best football for the bigger teams.

"Hopefully being on Sky will lift our game as well.  We need to get back on track because the last two away performances haven't been like us.

"We have let goals in and we need to be more compact tomorrow, but we'll be going there looking to win the game.

"It will be a tough ask but I'm looking forward to it and I hope the players are as well.  We have won big games while I've been here and I hope we don't let ourselves down."

City opened up a 10-point gap at the top of League One with a 4-1 midweek win at Walsall to tighten their stranglehold on the division.

The Foxes were only relegated from the Championship on the final day of last season and now seem all set for an immediate return to the second tier.

And Sheridan is certainly an admirer.

"Nigel has done an excellent job and I always knew they'd be strong," he said.  "They have some excellent players and they were always going to be there or thereabouts.

"They play good football consistently and that is why they are at the top, and full credit to them.  The front two are a handful and will be a big threat.

"We know we will have to defend at times, but we also want to go there, express ourselves and try to get a result."
