PREVIEW: ROSES BATTLE IN PROSPECT

Posted on: Mon 02 Mar 2009

Athletic face their second game against a fellow promotion challenger in three days as Leeds United make the short trip over the Pennines tonight.

Both clubs go into this Roses derby on the back of wins against teams in the play-off picture on Saturday.

Chris Taylor's header secured a last-gasp 3-2 win over Millwall at the New Den on Saturday, while Leeds' top scorer Jermaine Beckford scored the winner as United saw off Scunthorpe by the same scoreline at Elland Road.

The win over the Lions took Latics up to fourth place in League One with 57 points from 34 games, while Leeds (54pts from 33 games) lie just three points behind.

Athletic came out on top earlier in the season as winger Taylor (pictured) scored twice in a 2-0 win at Elland Road.

After missing out in the play-off final against Doncaster last season many pundits had Leeds pencilled in as title favourites, but they struggled early on and former boss Gary McAllister paid with his job just days before Christmas.

Simon Grayson made the switch from Blackpool to take over, and the former Leeds player has dragged United back into the play-off picture.

Two straight wins (2-0 v Cheltenham and Saturday's victory over Scunthorpe) have aided the cause as Grayson looks to take Leeds forward.

United have won six games on the road, suffering nine defeats and drawing just once, with 18 goals scored and 21 conceded away from home.

Latics chief John Sheridan must decide whether to stick with a winning side following the win at Millwall.

Mark Crossley (back) and Matty Wolfenden (thigh) are the only absentees for Latics, who can only use five of their seven loanees in the match squad tonight.

Fabio Ferreira hasn't made the squad, so it remains to be seen if Dean Windass will miss out again having been the unlucky player at Millwall on Saturday.

Leeds' Luciano Becchio returns from a ban, but Jonny Howson is suspended after receiving two yellow cards during the win over Scunthorpe.

Ex-Latics Neil Kilkenny and Andrew Hughes could miss out along with Frazer Richardson and Andy Robinson, who picked up a hamstring injury on Saturday.
