LATICS REMEMBER ERNIE COOKSEY

Posted on: Thu 02 Jul 2009

Today marks exactly 12 months since former Latics midfielder Ernie Cooksey sadly passed away.

Tragically, 'Our Ernie' never got to see the birth of his daughter, who came into the world just weeks after his death at the young age of just 28.

He had twice battled cancer and put up a brave, brave fight against malignant melanoma before sadly passing away surrounded by his family.

Ernie's passing sparked tributes from around the world as the true spirit of the terrier-like midfielder shone through.

He joined Athletic after the club went into administration in summer 2003 and made 41 appearances before joining near neighbours Rochdale in September 2004.

Fans continue to remember Ernie through various fundraising activities for the Factor 50 charity, and of course the famous 'Ernieflag'.
