Latics have released striker Darren Byfield, after the experienced striker failed to impress Athletic manager Dave Penney on a short term contract.

Byfield made just one start for Athletic in his second spell at the club, failing to find the back of the net.

With Latics acquiring loanee Nick Blackman from Blackburn Rovers Byfield had slipped further down the pecking order.

Manager Dave Penney said: "We'd like to thank Darren for his efforts whilst with us.

"However we need to channel our team's resources and the style we play in a different direction."
