SADLERS SHOCK LEEDS

Posted on: Wed 17 Feb 2010

Walsall and Bristol Rovers have this week blown the promotion race in Coca-Cola League One wide open.

Chris Hutchings certainly received the positive response he demanded after Walsall's defeat at Boundary Park on Saturday.

The Walsall manager, who was scathing in his criticisms of his side's display against Latics, saw them hit back last night with a shock 2-1 win at second-placed Leeds United.

Goals from Dwayne Mattis and Clayton McDonald earned Walsall victory which left Leeds with only one win in their last seven league matches.

Suddenly Leeds, who at one stage were runaway leaders, have Colchester and Charlton breathing down their necks.

Charlton missed a golden opportunity to increase the pressure on the top two on Monday night when they lost 2-1 at Bristol Rovers.

Latics' next opponents Colchester, surprisingly held to a 2-2 draw at bottom-club Stockport on Saturday having been 2-0 ahead after 18 minutes, overcame that disappointment last night winning 1-0 at Yeovil to leapfrog Charlton into third place.

Huddersfield last night strengthened their play-off prospects with a 2-1 win at Carlisle where Jordan Rhodes, son of former Latics keeper Andy, scored his 18th goal of the season.

Norwich are the main beneficiaries of the slips by Leeds and Charlton as they have established a four-point lead at the top of the table.
