Manager Dave Penney has decided against adding midfield man Simon Whaley to his squad.

Whaley has spent a couple of weeks training with Latics and playing in two reserve games to keep fit and for Penney and his coaching staff to have a close look at him.

But with plenty of cover in midfield, it has been decided that if the squad was to be increased in size then other positions would take priority.

Whaley is expected to sign for John Sheridan's Chesterfield later this week..
