POLITICIANS BACK FOOTBALL 4 HEROES

Posted on: Wed 10 Mar 2010

The Football League's 'Football for Heroes' week has received cross-party political support with both the current and shadow Ministers for Sport backing the week of action.

Between March 6 and 14, all 72 Football League clubs are staging a home game dedicated to raising awareness and funds for Help for Heroes - the official charity of The Football League for the 2009/10 season.

And this week Minister for Sport, Gerry Sutcliffe and Shadow Sports and Olympics Minister, Hugh Robertson MP have added their voices to the raft of plaudits from inside the game.

"I am delighted to support The Football League's 'Football for Heroes' week that is giving something back to so many of our loyal troops and their families," said Sutcliffe, MP for Bradford South.

"It's fantastic that all 72 clubs in The League are right behind this and also working hard to raise money for our soldiers inured in the line of duty for their country."

And his counterpart, Robertson - MP for Faversham and Mid Kent - added,

"Having spent just over ten years in The Army myself, I know how important it is for soldiers on active service to know that they are supported at home.

"Through their many clubs, The Football League are uniquely placed to make this contribution and I am absolutely delighted that they are supporting Help for Heroes."

Although Football for Heroes week culminates this Sunday, The Football League will continue to support the charity that helps rehabilitate military personnel wounded whilst serving their country.

In just 28 months, Help for Heroes has raised an incredible £40m and League clubs will continue generating funds and awareness of the charity until the end of the season with a number holding Help for Heroes events as the current campaign heads down the final straight.
