Gerry Taggart's worst fears were realised as Latics picked up two injuries in today's 1-0 friendly win against Championship club Preston North End at Boundary Park.

Paul Dickov's No 2 explained that in the build up to the match he was worried that injuries would be sustained in their final pre-season workout.

Striker Ryan Brooke damaged ankle ligaments scoring the match-winning goal while Reuben Hazell aggravated an Achilles problem which had been troubling him pre-season.

Taggart said: "The last thing we wanted to do today was to pick up injuries, but unfortunately that has happened.

"I was very nervous before the game and was very conscious of players getting injured and we have lost Ryan who is going to be a big player for us this season."

Taggart continued: "If you had asked the staff they would have wanted it would have to remain injury free during pre-season.

"That hasn't been the case, but we have got the lads together, told them what we wanted and they have all pulled together.

"We are reasonably happy where we are at, but the fun and games start next week when it really counts."

Taggart thought it took Latics time to get into their stride against Preston and they lacked the high tempo to their game which they had displayed in other pre-season matches.

He was pleased, however, how Latics remained strong and resolute to grind out a win when they weren't at their best.
