SECOND-HALF REPORT

Posted on: Sat 14 Aug 2010

Stunning strikes from Dean Furman, Oumare Tounkara and Kieran Lee ensured Latics maintained their 100-per-cent start to their npower League One campaign.

They followed their opening-day win at Tranmere with victory against Notts County in their first sortie on home soil thanks to first goals for the club from both Furman and Tounkare and a great strike from Lee.

Latics, 1-0 ahead at the break, failed to hit the heights they scaled in the opening period as the game became scrappy and disjointed.

County, who had Krystain Pearce booked for a foul on Lewis Alessandra, made the first substitution of the day just short of the hour when Kevin Smith replaced Ben Burgess in a straight striker swop as they looked for new ideas up front.

Latics doubled their advantage midway through the second period with another peach of a goal, this time from loan-signing Tounkara who is pictured with fellow loan signing Jean Yves M'voto.

Kieran Lee released the Sunderland striker on the right after a long punt forward from defence and the striker walloped a first-time shot across the face of goal into the far corner from the tightest of angles.

County manager Craig Short's response was to haul off Ricky Ravenhill and Ben Davies and replace them with John Spicer and Jake Jervis, the last throw of the dice for the visitors.

Latics made their first change after 78 minutes when Dean Kelly replaced Djeny Bembo-Leta and that was followed by Chris Taylor replacing Alessandra with five minutes remaining.

Lee added a third goal for Latics four minutes from time, starting and finishing the marvellous move. He made a break from right back, played the ball to Tounkare on the right and then ran on to the return to shoot high into the roof of the net from 10 yards, the crowning glory following an impressive display.

Full-time: Latics 3, Notts County 0.
