PLAYERSHARE PROGRAMME BONANZA

Posted on: Tue 17 Aug 2010

Paul Dickov's transfer kitty has received a further £1,000 from Trust Oldham's 'Latics Playershare' fund-raising initiative.

The latest donation comes from Dubai-based businessman Gary Turner after he was given 400 Latics programmes.

You will remember a recent appeal on the official website from Latics' fan Stephen Holt who wanted a new home for the collection of 400 programmes he and brother Michael, both former ball boys at Boundary Park, had amassed.

Gary spotted the story and contacted Stephen as he was looking for Latics memorabilia for a sports bar he is creating at his villa in Dubai.

"There is quite a contingent of West Ham fans and it will be nice when I invite them round to show them the programmes from the Littlewoods Cup, semi-final victory," he joked.

On his return home, Gary arranged to collect the programmes which he intends to ship back to the Gulf.

Gary, who was given the programmes, decided he wanted to help Latics as a result of his good fortune which is why, after consulting Stephen, decided to make a gift to Playershare.

"I read on the website about 89-year-old Jack Gordon giving £1,000 to Latics Playershare and thought it would be nice to also make a contribution," he explained.

Stephen said: "It is a win, win situation for everyone. Michael and I have found a good home for the programmes and Latics have also benefited.

"The programmes were packed away in a large box and were no use apart from nostalgia."

Despite being based in Dubai and only seeing Latics play a couple of times each season Gary, whose company is Ashton-under-Lyne based Whitecroft Lighting, still has a season ticket.

Gary has been watching Latics since 1964 and as a teenager was a junior at Latics playing in the same side as Gary Hoolickin.
