ABBOTT LOOKS TO POLE-AXE LATICS

Posted on: Fri 20 Aug 2010
Former Boundary Park striker Pawel Abbott admits it will a peculiar experience trying to score against Latics as opposed to finding the net for them.

Abbott has more reason than most to look forward to the top-of-the-table clash between Latics and Charlton tomorrow at The Valley.

It was only earlier this month that former Polish under-21 international Abbott completed a move to the Addicks.

Abbott said: "When you move clubs, you don't expect to play against your former team so soon.

"It will be nice to see the lads and I am sure the game will be like a training session in terms of playing against team mates."

Abbott is delighted how quickly he has settled at his new club for whom he scored twice in a 4-3 Carling Cup defeat at Shrewsbury.

He said: "It is nice to get off the mark so quickly, and now I am looking to open my league account.

"It would be nice to score tomorrow, but I would be happy to do so against any team."

Abbott says he has good memories of his season with Latics adding he had a good relationship with the fans.

He explained: "Unfortunately my second half to last season wasn't the best as I couldn't get my fitness back after being injured.

"It was a bit of a sour note to leave on the back end of my performances in the second half of the season.

"I would like to thank the fans for the support they gave me and the patience they showed when things weren't going well."

Abbott says Charlton could not have wished for a better start as they have won their first two league games against Bournemouth and Leyton Orient.

"We have done really well to come out with two victories, especially as in both games we have been down to 10 men," he explained.

Abbott is hoping it turns out to be a good career move and he can help Charlton regain former glories as they were in the Premier League until 2007.

He continued: "The club has been in decline for the last few years and it has been a heartbreaking time for the club.

"Hopefully we can maintain our good start and go on to win promotion as the first priority is to get back into the Championship.

"The set up at Charlton is definitely Premier League. You can see the potential here by the fact we had 16,000 fans here for our opening game and it provides an extra boost when you have so many fans getting behind the team."

Abbott says there has been a massive turnover in the playing staff as the budget has been cut.

Manager Phil Parkinson has still made a number of key signings and Abbott believes the squad is more than good enough to challenge for promotion.

The exodus of players has seen 17 leave including Jonjo Shelvey to Liverpool and Nicky Bailey to Middlesbrough for combined transfers of £3.1million.

Others to leave have included Frazer Richardson, Deon Burton, Lloyd Sam and Matt Spring.

Charlton have made 11 signings including Sheffield Wednesday striker Akpo Sodje, Norwich defender Gary Doherty, Southend pair Simon Francis and Alan McCormack and Johnnie Jackson from Notts County.

Charlton will be without two influential players tomorrow as defender Christian Dailly and midfield man Jose Semedo are both suspended following their sendings off in the opening two league matches.
