SECOND-HALF REPORT

Posted on: Sat 28 Aug 2010

Latics endured a frustrating afternoon as they were held at home by Yeovil.

The match failed to reach the dizzy heights of earlier matches, though Latics remain unbeaten in npower League One.

Not for the first time, however, Latics found the Glovers awkward opponents as they have now failed to record a win against them in their last five meetings.

Latics, despite being far from their best, still did enough to win as Yeovil were indebted to keeper John Sullivan who made three superb saves to deny Paul Dickov's side.

After a goalless opening period, Latics received an almighty let off early in the second half when Paul Black was lucky not to concede a penalty after looking to trip Andy Williams.

Keeper Sullivan came to Yeovil's rescue for a third time with another important save to keep out a close-range header from Ritchie Jones following a Dale Stephens free kick.

Djeny Bembo replaced Warren Feeney midway through the second period to try and inject new ideas into the front line as Latics laboured in their bid to break the deadlock.

That was soon followed by the introduction of Deane Smalley for Taylor to give fresh legs on the left wing while the last throw of the dice with nine minutes left saw striker Dean Kelly replace Dean Furman.

Oumare Tounkara blazed an angled shot into the side netting from a similar position to the spectacular goal he scored in the opening home league game against Notts County.

Yeovil produced a late flurry as Brill did well to turn over a header from Paul Huntington while J P Kalala had a shot deflected for a corner.

Latics had a shout for a last-minute penalty turned down after Kieran Lee went down in the box following a challenge by Owain Tudor-Jones.

In stoppage time, Latics would have lost but for a fine save by Brill to keep out a long-range effort from Tudor-Jones.

Yeovil might have snatched victory again after Brill came out of his area and completely missed his kick only for Reuben Hazell to save the day as Luke Freeman burst through on goal.

Full-time: Latics 0, Yeovil 0.
