Paul Dickov was forced into making changes to his Latics team for tonight's Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie against Shrewsbury Town at Boundary Park.
Jason Jarrett (pictured), available again after serving a one-match ban, was ruled out through illness and Ritchie Jones through a hamstring strain.
Saturday's striker pairing against Yeovil were also missing as Warren Feeney was on international duty with Northern Ireland while Oumare Tounkara stepped down to the bench.
That meant Dean Kelly and Djeny Bembo formed the new strike partnership while Smalley stepped in for Jones on the right of midfield.
Shrewsbury, like Latics played eight of the team which played on Saturday when they won handsomely 4-0 at Stockport County.
