SECOND-HALF REPORT

Posted on: Tue 31 Aug 2010

Latics found themselves on the wrong end of a giankilling act as they were beaten at home by League Two Shrewsbury in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

It was a disappointing night for Latics who were beaten by a late goal from Shrewsbury winger Steve Leslie.

And having earlier been twice denied by the woodwork, the minnows were certainly good value for their victory.

The stalemate continued at the start of the second half with both teams cancelling out the other.

Latics continued to struggle to find a way through a well-organised Shrews defence.

They were restricted to long-range attempts from Djeny Bembo and Paul Black.

Manager Paul Dickov's reaction was to make a double change midway through the second half as Oumare Tounkara and Rodrigue Dikaba (pictured) replaced Dean Kelly and Deane Smalley.

It was Congolese international Dikabe's debut for Latics.

Tounkara had a decent attempt at goal not long after his introduction, but it was easily saved by diving keeper Chris Neal.

Latics were saved by the woodwork for a second time in the match when keeper Dean Brill did brilliantly to divert a header from Shane Cansdell-Sherriff on to the upright.

The match opened up in the final quarter as both teams went toe to toe in search of what looked like being the match-winning goal as Chris Taylor and Dikaba had openings.

It was the Shrews who belatedly made the breakthrough with seven minutes left when Leslie drilled home a shot from the edge of the penalty area low to the left to Brill.

Latics came agonisingly close to equalising in the dying seconds of the match as Dale Stephens' free kick from 25 yards whistled inches wide of the upright as it was destined not to be Latics' night.

Full-time: Latics 0, Shrewsbury 1.
