Kirk Millar has cleared up the mystery of his goal that never was on his debut for Northern Ireland under-21s.

The 18-year-old Latics winger is claiming the goal which was credited to team-mate William Grigg.

"The confusion seems to have come about because William got the final touch, but the ball was going in from my header so I am claiming the goal," declared Millar.

The Northern Ireland Football Association's official website and the Belfast Telegraph daily newspaper both credited the goal to Grigg, but the Press Association gave it to Millar as opinions were divided as to which played ought to be credited.

Millar says it was exciting to win his first cap for the under-21s when he came on as a second-half substitute in the 4-0 win against San Marino at Coleraine.

"It was a great experience and I loved every minute of the whole trip and can't wait to win my second cap," he continued.

Millar was an unused substitute for the under-21s on Tuesday when they lost 3-0 to Germany in Ingolstadt in their Euro qualifier.

Millar, who only celebrated his 18th birthday last month, was one of only two 18-year-olds in the under-21 squad, the other being Middlesbrough's James Gray.

There will be further international action for Millar later this month when he plays for Northern Ireland under-19s in two internationals away to Iceland.
