MANAGING Director Simon Corney has praised Latics' supporters following one of Boundary Park's biggest crowds of the season on New Year's Day.

Nearly 10,000 supporters witnessed Latics steamroller promotion rivals Nottingham Forest 5-0, and Corney was delighted with the response:

"Everyone is buzzing, and you could see the effect that a big crowd has on the team.  Perhaps people have bottled it in the past, but it's certainly the opposite now.

"I think the good attendance was down to a combination of the team doing well, the fact it was New Year's Day and the £2 offers for the previous games.  OK, we were disappointed with the away turnout from Forest, but to have 8,000 home fans in was brilliant."

And will Latics be making many moves in the transfer window?

"We're trying to keep our best players, but it's not going to be easy. On the other side of things, if John needs to bring someone in then he'll tell us, but we won't be signing people for the sake of it.

"It disrupts the team, and if we stay relatively injury-free, where will a new signing be playing?  It's a delicate balancing act."
