ACTION REPLAY FOR DICKOV

Posted on: Wed 18 Aug 2010

Paul Dickov believes Latics can cause a Carling Cup, first-round upset tomorrow at Championship club Scunthorpe United.

The Latics manager admits it won't be easy, however, after the Iron pulled off a shock result in their opening league match.

He said: "We are not being naive as Scunthorpe are a team which is rightly in a higher division than ourselves as they showed going to a hard place like Reading, who are a good team, and winning 2-1.

"We will have to show them a lot of respect, but at the same time go and give a good account of ourselves.

"It is a big test for us, but I will be telling my players to go out and show what good players they are.

"There is no better way of doing that than against a team from a higher division.

"Let's go and enjoy it as the pressure is off us, but that is not to say we don't want to go there and win.

"To do that, we have to keep doing the right things we did at Tranmere and add the quality that we know we have.

"It is getting through to the players they are all good players. If they are at it and do the right things, we will be a good team."

That is the sort of ethos which has brought success to Scunthorpe who staved off the threat of relegation last season despite being the smallest club in the Championship.

They are a side admired by Dickov who said: "Scunthorpe are wrongly one of the favourites for relegation.

"They went to Reading and won on Saturday, and they will surprise a lot of teams from what I have seen of them pre-season.

"The Scunthorpe players work their socks off, but they also play good football and they will be a danger from set pieces.

Dickov says he has watched the DVD of Saturday's win at Tranmere several times to get pointers for improvements.

He explained: "What pleased me was our will to win the game. We defended well from back to front and I thought our back four were a different class.

"I still think we can be better when we have possession and, from watching the game, I have seen areas when we can improve.

"When we were 1-0 and 2-0 up, it should have been a case of keeping the ball, not rushing things and seeing the game out.

"They are things to work on. May be I am being picky, but it is a case of me wanting to get things right."
