RESERVES IN ACTION TONIGHT

Posted on: Wed 21 Apr 2010

Latics played their final home game in the totesport.com League tonight when they faced Tranmere Rovers at Ewen Fields.

It was the visitors that almost opened the scoring when after only 5 minutes striker Kithson Bain was clean through on goal but Floszman came racing of his line to smoother the strikers effort.

It was turning out to be an evenly contested affair but thankfully it was Latics that took the lead after 18 minutes when Lewis Alessandra hit a side foot volley into the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Six minutes later Tranmere drew level when Chris Shuker set up Aaron Cresswell to equalize.

Two minutes later and Tranmere were in the lead this time it was Ashcroft who was on the mark for the Wirrall lads.

Latics came roaring back and good play down the left between Mellor, Bembo-Leta and Steer, resulted in the latter firing just over the Tranmere bar.

It was turning into a good contest as both sides always looked like adding to the score.

Half-time: Latics Reserves 1 - 2 Tranmere Reserves

Latics started the second period brightly against their more experienced opposition.

Ten minutes into the second half Latics almost drew level when Ferenc Fodor hit a 30 yard screamer that the keeper parried but the loose ball fell kindly for Bembo-Leta whose effort hit the keeper and the ball bounced up on to the top of the cross bar rolling along then falling the wrong side.

Latics were undoubtedly the better side in the second half and had a great chance to score when Alessandra was clean through on goal only for the keeper to make a stunning save.

Rovers increased their lead against the run of play when Bain smashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net to give the score line an unfair look.

Two minutes from time Latics got some reward when Bembo-Leta hit a terrific goal from the edge on the penalty area to set up an exciting finish.

Straight afterAndy Crompton had a chance to put the scores level but fired over the bar and then Alessandra failed with an effort right on the stroke of full time.

That is the way things stayed with Latics unable to get any further goals that their second half superiority deserved and it was a losing end to their home League campaign.
