TP: YOUTH NEED THEIR 'A' GAME
Youth boss Tony Philliskirk is hoping his side bring their 'A' game to the table when they take on Rotherham United tomorrow (KO 7pm).
The club's youngsters will step onto the Boundary Park turf knowing their reward for success would be a mouth-watering FA Youth Cup Third Round tie at Newcastle United.
Philliskirk's side set up the meeting with the Millers by seeing off Fleetwood Town on the Fylde Coast last week.
But the Latics camp know they're in for a tough test tomorrow - and the coaching staff know their opponents better than most as centre of excellence manager Mick Priest was head of youth at Millmoor last year.
Philliskirk told Latics World: "Rotherham are a well-organised side with some good young players, as I saw when I went to watch them against Worksop last week.
"Obviously Mick [Priest] is here with me now and we have a good relationship with their coaching staff. We even play them in a pre-season friendly every year and came out on top in a narrow game last time around.
"We are under no illusions that we will have to be at our best to progress, but there's a fantastic carrot there in the shape of a chance to go to Newcastle in third round. I don't think the lads need any more incentive."
He added: "We like to get the ball down and play and we've got plenty of pace in the side, so I'm hoping the big pitch will help us. It's a big occasion for the lads in front of their family and the senior staff.
"But quite a few of the team have played at reserve-team level already so playing at Boundary Park shouldn't hold any fears for them.
"This is a great opportunity. I hope the lads bring their 'A' on Wednesday night and show everyone we are a decent team. I'm sure they will do the club proud."
