Over 30's Womens' Football rebranded to Womens' Recreational Football!

Our Over 30’s Women’s session, now rebranded to 'Womens Recreational Football', is held at the Honeywell Centre every Tuesday evening, 7pm-8pm. The session was created back in September 2021 in partnership with Manchester FA to encourage women over 30 to participate in football, whether they are new to the sport or have played for a number of years, during the lead up to what was a historic summer as the England Lionesses won the Women's Euros 2022 at Wembley.

12 months on from the session being launched, we now partnered with ‘Active Through Football Oldham’ who help support the session and have provided full Oldham Athletic kits for the women to wear when taking part in competitions. After consulting with the participants and project partners, the session will now be named ‘Women’s Recreational Football’ to allow the session to be more inclusive to a wider age group of participants! Using the term 'Recreational Football' emphasises the session is all about playing football for fun, fitness and social interaction rather than competition.

After the success of the Women’s Euro’s this year, we have received a huge amount of interest from women that want to play. Any women aged 18+ are now welcome to join the session and to take part in the fun!

Discussing the session, Project Lead, Emily Ashworth;

"The session creates an opportunity for women over 18 to play for fun, fitness and social interation, play competitively in games and tournaments in addition to the regular Tuesday night session or just to turn up on a flexible basis and play football for an hour.

In their first ever competitive tournament as a team and for some, the first tournament they have ever participated in, The team walked away with a huge victory and won the whole competition!

After the tournament win back in May they were eager to play more. With the flexibility of the session, it allows the participants to choose to compete or just to play on a Tuesday evening for fun and to socialise. I am really proud of how much the session has grown in its first 12 months and I am really excited to see what the next 12 months and beyond hold!"

Active Through Football Project Manager, James Wainwright said:

Active Through Football is an exciting new project trying to support Oldham residents to keep active by participating in football, in any shape or form whether that be competitive, walking football or casual football like the Womens Recreational Session.

We think the name change of the session makes the project more welcoming and inclusive for more women in Oldham to get involved. Active Through Football Oldham is delighted to support this project and have seen it grow exponentially over the last few months!

If you have been inspired by the lionesses this summer and want to either return to playing football or try it for the first time, get in touch with Emily for this session to join a fun and welcoming environment.
