Match preview for Walsall vs Oldham Athletic on 12 Aug 17

11 August 2017

Oldham Athletic take on Wallsall at Banks's Stadium on Saturday, August 12, 3pm kick of

Both teams are without a competitive win in the 2017/18 season and found themselves on the wrong end of 3-2 score lines at the hands of Championship opposition in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

Amadou Bakayoko put the Saddlers in front against Sheffield United, but their hosts were too strong and Erhun Oztumer’s injury time penalty proved to only be a consolation.

It was another late penalty meanwhile, which put Oldham out of the competition. A Paul Green free-kick and Craig Davies penalty had put them level at 2-2 and even after going down again they went
agonisingly close to extra time, when Peter Clarke hit the post moments from the end.

Latics manager John Sheridan gave his thoughts ahead of the match: “It will be a tough game and they are a good footballing side.

“They had a decent season last year and Jon Whitney does well in
bringing a few young players through. Technically, they always try and play the right way and they are always a decent outfit at home.

“With the start we have had to the season, we would like to go
there and give a good account of ourselves and get a win.”

The Oldham squad has been bolstered since their cup exit, as new signing Gyamfi Kyeremeh has received international clearance and is available, plus Ryan Flynn is hopeful to be fit after treatment
on an Achilles injury. Darius Osei however, remains out with a hamstring injury.

Oldham’s last visit to the Banks’s Stadium ended in a 2-0 defeat and the hosts are favourites to claim victory again at 6/5, while Oldham are 5/2 for the win and the draw is 21/10 on Sky Bet.
