MATCH PREVIEW: Carlisle United vs. Oldham Athletic

26 December 2018

Oldham Athletic travel to Brunton Park today to take on Carlisle United in the Sky Bet League Two fixture (3pm).

Latics will be looking to bounce back from Saturday’s 2-3 defeat at home to Exeter City and maintain their push for a playoff spot.

Frankie Bunn’s men currently find themselves four points off the playoff places and one point behind today’s opponents Carlisle.

Andy Taylor returned from injury on Saturday and he will be pushing for a start after he recent lay off.

Dan Gardner, Jose Baxter, Zeus De La Paz, Jonathan Benteke and Ousmane Fane are all still recovering.

Carlisle are currently on a two-game winning run in the league after an impressive 4-0 victory over high flyers Colchester United and then a 2-3 away win at Crawley Town on Saturday.

Latics fans will be no stranger to current Cumbrians manager John Sheridan who will be determined to get one over his former club when the sides met.

It is likely that Carlisle will not change much in terms of their team selection after back-to-back wins, but with the Christmas fixtures coming thick and fast there may be some surprises.

The sides met earlier in the season at Boundary Park with Carlisle running out 1-3 winners on the day with Ishmael Miller grabbing Latics’ goal.

Carlisle have won the last three times the teams have met and our last win at Brunton Park came in April 2014.

Latics ran out 0-1 winners that day thanks to a strike from midfielder James Dayton.

Oldham Athletic are priced at 6/4 to beat Carlisle United.

Sam Rosbottom and Roy Butterworth will be on commentary on iFollow Latics for supporters who cannot make the game.

MATCH REPORT: Latics Suffer Boxing Day Defeat

26 December 2018

Latics suffered a heavy Boxing Day defeat as a brace from Jerry Yates and further goals from Hallam Hope, Ashley Nadesan, Danny Grainger and Gary Liddle secured the three points for Carlisle United.

It was a tentative start to the game, but Latics were enjoying the share of the possession early on.

Sam Surridge almost threaded a pass through to Callum Lang, but Cambrians defender Tom Parkes was there to make a vital interception.

Hope had Carlisle’s first chance of the game as he cut inside from the left and fired a shot over the bar.

It would be Hope who broke the deadlock after Latics were caught out down their left-hand side with Ashley Nadesan skipping into the box, before the ball eventually fell to Hope who scrambled it in.

Latics responded well with Christopher Missilou running down the right before his cross was fizzed across goal with Surridge inches away from connecting.

However, the home side doubled their lead after Jamie Devitt was allowed too much space for a shot on the edge of the box.

Daniel Iversen parried the initial effort, but Hope turned it back inside for Yates who tapped home for Carlisle.

Chris O’Grady had a huge chance to pull one back for Latics on the half-time whistle as Andy Taylor’s cross fell to the Latics striker, but he couldn’t keep the effort down inside the six-yard box.

Latics were once again on top at the start of the second half as Missilou crossed for Surridge with the ball inches away from the striker once again.

As Latics were pushing to get back into the game Carlisle countered with Hope crossing to Nadesan to score.

It would be four minutes later as Grainger fired in a freekick into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Things got worse for Latics as Missilou made a mistake allowing Devitt to slide the ball into Yates’ path and he slotted the ball past Iversen.

Surridge forced Adam Collin into a decent save before Liddle wrapped up the game, bundling the ball into the net from Hope’s cross.

Latics must bounce back from this defeat when they travel to Port Vale on Saturday.
