Latics continue to be in Sky Bet League Two action this weekend as they travel to Brisbane Road to take on Leyton Orient (3pm KO).

Form Guide

Leyton Orient come into the game on a decent run of form with them having lost none of the last four and having won both of the last two.

Prior to the recent two game winning run, the O’s had found wins hard to come by with just one from the previous 11 but this upturn in fortunes has lifted them to 11th in the league table.

Orient have been impressive defensively of late and have shipped just one goal in their last four games.

They are currently seven points outside of the playoff places and they will know that they need a win to keep up their outside chances of taking a playoff spot by the end of the season.

The O’s last six

  1. (A) Carlisle United – 1-0 win
  2. (A) Newport County – 1-0 win
  3. (H) Scunthorpe United – 1-1 draw
  4. (H) Stevenage – 0-0 draw
  5. (A) Exeter City – 0-4 loss
  6. (A) Grimsby Town – 1-0 win

Head-to-Head

Meetings: 66

Latics wins: 26
Leyton Orient wins: 20
Draws: 20

Scored: 101
Conceded: 86

The sides met on the opening day of the 2020/21 season and the game looked to be heading to a stalemate until the 89th minute when Danny Johnson scored to ensure his side left Boundary Park with maximum points.

The last time Latics beat Leyton Orient came in an FA Cup tie in November 2014 with Mike Jones scoring the only goal of the game to book Oldham’s place in the Second Round.

Team News

It looks like Zak Dearnley, George Blackwood and Marcus Barnes are out of action for an extended period with injuries.

Harry Clarke, Ben Garrity and Sido Jombati are working hard to regain fitness and get back in the matchday squad, whilst goalkeeper Ian Lawlor is out injured for what looks like the remainder of the season, with the emergency loan of Laurie Walker looking likely to be extended for a further week again.

Dylan Bahamboula is now on international duty with Congo and will return at the start of April.

Watch Out For

Sixth top scorer in the division Danny Johnson is someone that Latics will have to be wary off.

With 14 League Two goals to his name and one assist, Johnson has been a crucial player for the O’s this campaign.

The 28-year-old striker has a solid record as a Leyton Orient player with 19 goals in 44 appearances for the club.

The Middlesbrough born forward began his career in non-league turning out for Harrogate Town, Billingham Synthonia and Guisborough Town before getting a transfer to Cardiff City.

While at the Bluebirds, he had loan spells with Tranmere Rovers and Stevenage. After being released from Cardiff, Johnson moved back to the North East, signing for Gateshead.

His impressive form with the Tynesiders earnt him a move north of the border to Motherwell. He then signed for Dundee where he had a brief spell before joining Orient in January 2020.

Johsnon may be on a bit of a dry run at the moment but he has enjoyed playing against Latics of late and has scored in both of the last two times the clubs have met.

Familiar Face

Orient attacker Conor Wilkinson has also played for Latics.

Conor Wilkinson.jpg

Wilkinson came to Boundary Park on a loan deal in the 2014/15 season. In his time with the club he made 18 appearances scoring three times.

Wilkinson is currently in a rich vein of form having scored the winning goals in both of Orient’s last two games, a run he will hope to continue against his former side.

Like Danny Johnson, Wilkinson has also had a very good season and boasts nine goals and an assist in League Two action.

He joined the club in the summer of 2020 and has 17 goals to his name in all competitions for this current side.

In The Dugout

Jobi McAnuff is the man in the dugout for the hosts.

Jobi McAnuff.jpg

McAnuff was put in interim charge following Orient parting ways with Ross Embleton in late February and he has led his side to three wins in his opening six games as boss.

This is his first job in management, and he will mostly be known for his playing career, most notably with Reading although he did represent his current employers over 150 times as a player too.

Leyton Orient 2-1 Latics

27 March 2021

© Eddie Garvey

Alfie McCalmont scored for the third time in four games but it wasn’t enough to prevent Latics from slipping to defeat at Leyton Orient.

Individual mistakes cost Keith Curle’s side dearly as the visitors conceded twice in the first half to leave the capital empty-handed despite an encouraging overall performance.

Creating numerous chances and controlling large parts of the play, errors at the back proved to be their undoing.

McCalmont struck in spectacular fashion midway through the second period to give Latics hope of a comeback but despite having several sights of goal in the closing stages, they were unable to repair the damage.

Having registered his first win as Latics boss in midweek, Curle made one change from the victory over Exeter City, as Harry Clarke returned to the side from injury.

Unfortunately, it was Clarke’s slip which gifted the home side an eighth-minute opener, as his attempted pass back to goalkeeper Laurie Walker was intercepted by Conor Wilkinson, who seized on the mistake with a clinical angled finish.

Despite the concession of an early goal, Latics were undeterred in their play. Davis Keillor-Dunn was inches away from an Andrea Badan cross when directly in front of goal, while the in-form McCalmont dragged a shot wide after great work to weave his way to the edge of the area.

Conor McAleny also displayed excellent footwork to engineer the visitors’ best chance of the half, creating an opening before placing an angled shot across the dive of Lawrence Vigouroux, only for the ball to cannon off the post.

It remained an open game, with Walker saving from James Brophy, Wilkinson and Danny Johnson, before Latics conceded again two minutes before half-time.

A slip from Nicky Adams presented Dan Kemp with a chance to turn and rifle an unstoppable finish into the bottom left-hand corner.

To their credit, Latics continued plugging away and their good football was rewarded when McCalmont struck in spectacular fashion, curling a shot beautifully past Vigouroux from outside the area.

The visitors should really have completed the comeback, as Keiller-Dunn failed to find a finish after Adams had linked with Badan, before the attacker went close again and McAleny then shot over.

Latics must have thought they had equalised in stoppage time when Raphael Diarra’s header from a McCalmont corner flashed over the bar before Piergianni sent the ball wide as the visitors were unable to capitalise on their late pressure.

Oldham Athletic: Walker, Clarke, Piergianni, Whelan, Keillor-Dunn, Jameson, McAleny, Badan (Fage 70), Hilssner (Diarra 55), Adams (Borthwick-Jackson 81), McCalmont.

Subs not used: Bilboe, Ntambwe, Sutton, Vaughan.

Leyton Orient: Vigouroux, Widdowson, Cisse (McAnuff 59), Happe, Clay, Wilkinson (Dennis 59), Kemp, Brophy, Akinola, Turley, Johnson (Abrahams 84).

Subs not used: Sargeant, Ling, Coulson, Dayton.
