Latics vs. Forest Green Rovers

Sky Bet League Two - Matchday 46

7 May 2021

Latics conclude their 2020/21 Sky Bet League Two season this weekend as they welcome Forest Green Rovers to Boundary Park (3pm KO).

Keith Curle's men will be hoping to end the season on a high note following back-to-back defeats.

Last time out, it was Mansfield Town who got the better of Oldham with a goal on Zak Dearnley's return coming in vain as his side fell to a 4-1 defeat.

Form Guide

Forest Green know that a win in the final game of the season will guarantee them a place in the play-offs.

However, they do come into the game on the back of a tricky run of form that has seen them win just two of their last 11 games and losing six of the matches in that sequence.

Rovers know that they are one of three sides that are looking to make 7th place their own and they will no doubt have one eye on the results of Exeter City and Salford City.

Last time out, they managed a crucial win against fellow promotion hopefuls Tranmere Rovers to put a playoff spot in their own hands going into the last day.

Rovers' last six:
  1. Forest Green Rovers 2-1 Tranmere Rovers
  2. Forest Green Rovers 0-2 Barrow
  3. Crawley Town 0-0 Forest Green Rovers
  4. Forest Green Rovers 0-0 Exeter City
  5. Forest Green Rovers 3-2 Scunthorpe United
  6. Walsall 2-1 Forest Green Rovers

Latics are still looking for their first competitive victory over their opposition.

Oldham have turned up to the New Lawn twice this season, but the first time around the game was abandoned due to thick fog that meant players and officials struggled to see the other end of the pitch.

The score was 1-1 at the time but Rovers were the side that got the better of things in the replayed fixture. In an exciting contest, it finished 4-3 with Bobby Grant and Conor McAleny on the scoresheet for Latics.

Watch Out For

Aaron Collins was the man who scored Rovers' winner in their previous game against Tranmere.

Aaron Collins.jpg

The attacker is their second highest scorer with eight and he has also chipped in with six assists.

He began his career with Newport County and his performances caught the attention of the higher divisions and Wolverhampton Wanderers signed him in the summer of 2016.

Subsequent loan spells with Notts County, Tranmere Rovers, Maidstone United, Newport County and Colchester United followed his move to Molinuex, but the forward left the club without making an appearance.

His contract was mutually terminated in January 2019, but Collins wasn't long without a club and made the move to Morecambe the next month.

With an impressive eight goals and four assists in just 15 games for the Shrimpers, Forest Green decided to sign him in June 2019.

Since arriving at the New Lawn, Collins has played 80 times, scoring 13 times.

In The Dugout

Jimmy Ball is the new man in the dugout for the visitors.

Ball was named interim manager, stepping up from his role with the U18s, following the departure of former boss Mark Cooper a few weeks ago.

This is his first post in football management and he has an excellent chance to get a promotion on his CV quickly.

Match Officials

The referee in charge is Sebastian Stockbridge.

He has taken charge of 30 games in this campaign handing out 98 bookings and four red cards.

The last fixture he officiated involving Latics was in February 2021 as we picked a 2-2 draw away at Tranmere Rovers as Dylan Bahamboula scored a spectacular equaliser.

His assistants are Richard Woodward and Bradley Hall with Christopher Sarginson as the Fourth Official.

Sky Bet Odds

Forest Green Rovers have been made big favourites to book their place in the playoff places and are priced at 4/5 to win the game.

Latics are out at 3/1 to secure their first ever competitive win over Rovers and the draw is priced at 13/5.

Piracy - and illegal streaming of matches - does not only carry the risk of potential criminal action, but also has a greater financial impact on clubs while supporters are unable to attend matches.

The EFL's campaign would like to not only convey the message that piracy is immoral and illegal, but that it is also financially damaging club's across the divisions.

Oldham Athletic would like to make it clear that all fixtures are still strictly-behind-closed doors with spectators not being allowed entry.

Latics 0-3 Forest Green Rovers

8 May 2021

Latics suffer a defeat in the last game of the season as Forest Green Rovers secure their place in the Sky Bet League Two play-offs.

After a disappointing defeat away at Mansfield Town last weekend, Keith Curle named four changes to his side for the visit of play-off hopefuls Forest Green with Davis Keillor-Dunn, Dylan Fage, Dylan Bahamboula and Alfie McCalmont replacing Zac Dearnley, Marcus Barnes, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Conor McAleny.

Ahead of kick-off, we paid tribute to our fans who have sadly lost their lives over the past two seasons with a minute silence and the traditional ‘Latics Remembers’ being produced in their memory.

The visitors started the encounter on the front foot and nearly took the lead in the seventh minutes as wing-back Kane Wilson delivered a low cross to Joshua Davison, he laid it off to Aaron Collins, whose strike from inside the box looked destined for the back of the net, but was bravely blocked by Latics captain Carl Piergianni.

Curle’s side began to create half-chances of their own with the first occurring when Nicky Adams played the ball to Callum Whelan on the edge of the area, however, the former Manchester United prospect managed to slice an effort was blocked by a defender.

Moments later, Adams’ corner was cleared into the path of Fage and he smashed a fierce volley from range, but it went just past the far post to the relief of the shot-stopper.

Once again, Collins tried to break the deadlock from inside the area, but Piergianni blocked the strike before Odin Bailey smashed over Laurie Walker’s crossbar.

Just before the interval, Oldham had the best chance of the half when Whelan had fantastic vision and produced a marvellous ball over the top of the Forest Green backline to the onrushing Fage, but the Frenchman couldn’t keep his composure whilst one-on-one with Luke McGee so slotted wide of the target.

Soon into the second-half, Fage had another opportunity to put his side ahead, however, he snatched at his chance. Adams delivered a pinpoint cross into the path of the youngster inside the area, but the flicked wide from yards away.

In the 63rd minute, Forest Green got themselves ahead as Bailey produced an excellent reverse pass to slot substitute Jayden Richardson in behind, but Kyle Jameson brought him down resulting in a penalty for the visitors and Collins stepped and converted the spot-kick.

Minutes later, the Green Army cemented their place in the play-offs as goalscorer turned provider as Collins played the ball across the box to Bailey as he tapped into an empty net to spark wild celebrations.

Latics looked to get a goal back and nearly halved the deficit as Piergianni rose above his marker from a corner to head goalwards, but McGee produced a fine save to keep him at bay.

Jimmy Ball’s side secured all three points in the 80th minute as Collins raced through the Latics defence before coolly taking the ball over Walker before slotting into an open goal for his tenth league goal of the campaign.

Forest Green could’ve made it four when defender Baily Cargill produces great footwork to beat two defenders which allowed him one-on-on with Walker, however, the goalkeeper managed to deny him from finding the back of the net.
