Forest Green Rovers vs. Latics

Sky Bet League Two - Matchday 43

17 April 2022

© Eddie Garvey

Latics head to Forest Green Rovers on Easter Monday in Sky Bet League Two, a clash that both teams will be desperate for the three points (3pm KO).

Defeat last time out against Northampton Town and results elsewhere on Good Friday means Oldham are in need of their own Easter resurrection story.

It was a miserable afternoon for Latics as a goal in each half from the Cobblers saw the promotion-chasing side claim maximum points.

Form Guide

Latics fans will no doubt have been keeping close tabs on Forest Green in their last fixture and will have been let disappointed that the side that currently sit at the top of the pile were unable to do them a favour.

In somewhat of a shock result, the Green Army were put to the sword by relegation-threatened Barrow, losing 4-0 to the side now three points ahead of Oldham.

The lead that they have at the top of the table has taken a bit of a battering of late and failing to win either of their previous two has not helped this.

They have won half of their previous six and they will be hoping to cement their automatic promotion and title ambitions when they welcome Oldham to the New Lawn Stadium.

The gap between themselves and 2nd placed Exeter City is just two points at present whilst most importantly the gap to 4th placed Northampton Town is a very healthy nine points.

Rovers’ Last Six

  1. Barrow 4-0 Forest Green Rovers
  2. Forest Green Rovers 1-1 Hartlepool United
  3. Forest Green Rovers 1-0 Mansfield Town
  4. Forest Green Rovers 1-0 Scunthorpe United
  5. Colchester United 0-1 Forest Green Rovers
  6. Forest Green Rovers 1-1 Leyton Orient.

Head-to-Head

Meetings: 7

Latics wins: 0
Forest Green wins: 3
Draws: 4

This is the eighth time lucky for Oldham as they look to secure a competitive victory over their opposition.

The last time the two sides met was earlier on in this campaign when fans were treated to a ten-goal classic at Boundary Park.

Oldham came back from 4-1 down and then 5-3 down to make sure they didn’t leave empty-handed.

On the scoresheet, that day for Latics was Davis Keillor-Dunn with a brace, Hallam Hope, Jack Stobbs and the equalising goal was an own goal by Rovers’ Kane Wilson.

Watch Out For

Forest Green are likely to be without their top scorer for this clash.

Matty Stevens has had an immensely impressive campaign for Rovers and can boast 23 league goals.

He picked up an injury in the win over Scunthorpe and his side has since found things a bit harder in front of goal.

Fortunately for them, they also have the joint third-highest scorer in the division in Jamille Matt who will be looking to play himself back into goalscoring form when Latics travel to New Lawn Stadium.

Jamille Matt.jpg

With an impressive 17 league strikes to his name so far this season, Matt has shown he has the pedigree to cause teams problems, but he does currently find himself on a bit of a goal drought.

His last goal came in late January as Rovers won 4-0 away at Tranmere Rovers.

The 32-year-old has been a Forest Green player since July 2020 and such is his form for the club since he was appointed club captain ahead of this current season.

He will be hoping to finally add another promotion to his CV, he got so close when a Newport County player but ultimately was part of the side that suffered the heartbreak of a 1-0 loss at Wembley against Tranmere with the goal coming at the death of extra time.

The Jamaican forward has 35 goals for Rovers to date, coming from 84 games across all competitions.

In The Dugout

Rob Edwards is the man in the dugout for the hosts.

Rob Edwards.jpg

Edwards was appointed boss at the New Lawn in May 2021 and he made a good start; winning the Manager of the month award for August.

His other coaching roles include taking interim charge of Wolverhampton Wanderers as well as a full charge over their under 23 squads, managing AFC Telford United and also England’s under 16 sides.

As a player, Edwards is probably best known for his time with Wolves, where he played in the Premier League.

He will no doubt be excited about the prospect of adding a first Football League promotion to his managerial CV in the coming weeks.

Match Officials

The official in the middle for the game is Stephen Martin.

Stephen Martin.jpg

Martin last officiated a Latics game in August 2021 for our 2-1 defeat away at Bradford City. On that day, he handed out six yellow cards and zero red cards.

He's taken charge of 29 games, so far, this campaign, handing out a total of 87 yellow cards and four red cards.

Martin will be assisted by Nicholas Barnard and Rob Smith, with Christopher Sarginson as the Fourth Official.

Sky Bet Odds

Unsurprisingly, Forest Green are clear favourites for this clash and their league position is reflected in the short price of 2/5.

Oldham need to start winning games before time runs out on their Football League status and you can currently get odds of 6/1 for them to claim their first-ever competitive win over Rovers.

Last time the two sides met it ended in a draw, 7/2 is available for the same outcome this time around.

Forest Green Rovers 2-0 Latics

This game against the runaway league leaders was always going to be a tall order for Latics and so it proved on what turned out to be another crushing afternoon.

Two goals in the first half consigned Oldham to defeat at Forest Green and despite a much-improved showing after the break, there was to be no way back for John Sheridan’s side, a missed penalty from Christopher Missilou late in the game crystallising their woes.

Draws for Stevenage and Barrow leave Latics four points adrift of safety with three games of the season to play, their principal rivals also having a game in hand.

Forest Green have been the benchmark for the whole of League Two this season and they underlined their credentials during a first half that was one-way traffic.

If there was a goal to sum up Latics’ season, it was the opener inside eight minutes. A slack pass out of defence from Harrison McGahey went straight to Regan Hendry, whose 20-yard effort took a significant deflection as it looped over the back-peddling Danny Rogers.

There was a vibrancy to the hosts’ early attacking play, Rogers denying Hendry from range shortly afterwards, and Latics, without the presence of Piergianni in the back line, never appeared settled when under pressure.

Sheridan had opted for a line-up that appeared to be attack-minded and Latics had their moments. The visitors somehow failed to score with three chances in quick succession, Davis Keillor-Dunn, Jamie Hopcutt and Missilou being denied by a combination of goalkeeper Luke McGee and his defenders amid a goalmouth scramble.

Yet any respite for Latics was temporary, Nicky Cadden sending a free-kick over before Rogers saved from Jack Aitchison.

The home side added to their lead four minutes before the break, Jamille Mattstooping to score with a glancing header to convert a left-wing cross from Cadden.

Matt almost scored his second in added time, striding past Sutton and bearing down on goal but Rogers stood strong.

Sutton was part of a double change at the break, Hopcutt also making way as Kyle Jameson and Nicky Adams were introduced and, with thewords of Sheridan no doubt ringing in their ears, there was a renewed intent about Latics straight away.

A corner from Adams was cleared as far as Missilou, whose volley from the edge of the area was held by McGee.

Adams helped bring extra urgency to Latics’ play but the visitors were unable to capitalise on a number of crosses and dead balls delivered into the area. For all their increased possession, the visitors were sorely missing a cutting edge to their attack.

Even when Latics were presented with a golden opportunity to get back into the game, Jameson being hauled down inside the area with ten minutes remaining, they failed to take the chance, Missilou blazing the resulting penalty over the crossbar to complete a miserable afternoon.
