Latics vs. Salford City

Papa John's Trophy - Group B - Game One

31 August 2021

© Eddie Garvey

Latics are set to host Salford City in the opening fixture of the Papa John's Trophy group stage at Boundary Park this evening (7pm KO).

Keith Curle's men head into the clash after picking up their first league victory of the season following a dramatic comeback against Sutton United at Gander Green Lane.

Early into the second-half, David Ajiboye gave the hosts the lead which sparked jublient celebrations amongst the terraces during their first EFL goal on home turf.

However, Latics manufactured a remarkable turnaround which began in the 86th minute as substitute Davis Keillor-Dunn raced down the right-hand side before delivering a cross onto the head of Carl Piergianni and the skipper steered home.

In the 96th minute, Dylan Bahamboula spearheaded a slick counter-attack before Keillor-Dunn flicked the ball into the path of Junior Luamba as the youngster smashed it home to complete the dramatic comeback.

Head-to-Head

Latics have faced the Ammies on four occasions, losing twice, drawing once and winning once (scoring 4 and conceding 8).

In the last encounter, the boys in blue secured the first-ever win over the local side as Keillor-Dunn produced a memorable 92nd minute winner.

The draw arrived in January 2020 when Danny Rowe netted an equaliser in the front of a sold out away end.

Watch Out For

Ex-Latics attacker Conor McAleny arrived at the Peninusla Stadium in the summer and found the back of the net against Newport County at the weekend.

The 29-year-old began his career on the blue-half of Merseyside and featured twice in the first team. Whilst at the Toffees, McAleny enjoyed several loans spells which included an impressive period at Oxford United as he scored ten goals in 18 games.

Following spells at Fleetwood Town, Kilmarnock and Shrewsbury Town, he put pen-to-paper on a deal with Latics and it proved to be a shrewd move.

McAleny, operated on the left-hand side of a front three, firing in 21 goals in all competitions for Oldham. He established himself as a fans favourite as Boundary Park with his direct style of play.

In The Dugout

Gary Bowyer is the man in the dugout for the visitors.

The 50-year-old has a huge amount of experience on the touchline in the EFL which began at Blackburn Rovers.

Initially, he began as a caretaker before earning the job on a permanent basis, but he parted company with Rovers after two-years in charge of them.

Bowyer constructed a promotion at Blackpool and has establish himself as a fans favourite at Bloomfield Road. However, he endured a tough period in the hotseat at Bradford City as he dismissed after less than a year in the role.

Match Officials

The man in the middle tonight is James Oldham.

Match Reports

Latics 1-0 Salford City

31 August 2021

Latics begin their Papa John’s Trophy journey in style as Carl Piergianni proved to be the difference between his current and former side.

The hosts took the lead in the 43rd minute when Piergianni climbed above his marker to head past Salford’s shot-stopper.

Latics managed the second-half well, however, they did suffer a moment of panic when Kelly N’Mai teed up Hayden Campbell inside the box and, from a tight angle, managed to hit the post with five minutes left in the match.

Following our victory against Sutton United, Keith Curle constructed six changes for the Papa John’s Trophy clash with the Head Coach handing second-year scholar Benny Couto his professional debut after impressing in the Youth Team.

In the opening stages, Dylan Fage was presented with a golden opportunity to get his name on the scoresheet. Nicky Adams possessed great vision as he slotted the Frenchman one-on-one with the goalkeeper, however, he couldn’t keep his composure and blasted his effort over the crossbar.

Following that, Callum Whelan demonstrated his hunger to win possession off the visitors and then drove forward with intent before the former Manchester United man tried his luck from 35-yards, but it sailed over the target.

Gary Bowyer witnessed his side finally attack the Latics backline and they nearly broke the deadlock as Brandon Asante produced a bicycle-kick inside the box which looked goal bound, but Couto managed to clear it off the line.

Just before the interval, the host took the lead as the skipper led by example as he scored against his former club. Faysal Bettache delivered his corner onto the head of Piergianni and the towering defender steered his attempt past Zach Jeacock and into the back of the net.

Early into the second-half, Bettache channelled his inner David Beckham when he saw the ‘keeper off his line which resulted in him trying his luck from inside his own half, however, the QPR loanee dragged his effort wide of the target.

Matt Sargent looked to get his side level when he picked up the ball, dribbled goalwards and then sweetly-struck from distance which Jayson Leutwiler had to be alert to get down and deny the midfielder.

The Ammies nearly pulled themselves level with five minutes to go as N’Mai did well inside the box to manufacture a bit of space to pass to substitute Campbell before his effort hit the far post from a tight angle with Leutwiler managing to pick up the ball on the line as Latics impressively made it three wins in a week.

Oldham Athletic XI – Leutwiler (GK), Adams (Hope 69’), Whelan, Keillor-Dunn, Dearnley (Da Silva 46’), Jameson, Bettache (Luamba 76’), Bowden, Fage, Piergianni (C), Couto.
