Latics travel to South Wales this weekend for an encounter against Newport County with their sights set on a third consecutive win (3pm).

Last time out, a brace from Davis Keillor-Dunn set John Sheridan’s men on the way to a huge 2-1 win over Bristol Rovers.

Newport County come into the game on the back of two losses in a row.

Both of those games came against teams in the automatic promotion places in the form of Northampton Town and Forest Green Rovers.

However, prior to that they had won each of their previous four league outings, whilst only conceding one in the process.

County are in the hunt for promotion and sit in seventh place, however, if their nearest rivals win their games in hand, they will fall out of the play-off spots.

Latics welcomed Newport County to Boundary Park for the season opener.

The game was decided in County’s favour when veteran forward Kevin Ellison scored late on to ensure that his side came away victorious.

Although, the previous time before that Latics got the better of their Welsh opponents.

Aided by a first-half red card, goals from Keillor-Dunn, Bobby Grant and an own goal gave the 'boys in blue' a 3-2 win at home.

That was the second part of a league double completed over the Exiles.

In the reverse fixture, Keillor-Dunn was again on the scoresheet alongside Conor McAleny, Alfie McCalmont and Zak Dearnley.

Watch Out For

Dominic Telford is amongst the most lethal forwards in the division this season.

Level as top scorer with Forest Green’s Matt Stevens with an impressive 20 goals already this campaign, Telford is enjoying a fine spell.

He has been a Newport player since his transfer from Plymouth Argyle in January of last year.

This season has really see the striker come into his own and he has multiple EFL League Two Player of The Month awards to show for it.

Recently, he scored both goals in County’s 2-1 win over Barrow which saw him become the first Newport player to score 20 league goals in the top four divisions in a season since John Aldridge achieved it in the 1983/84 season.

The Burnley-born forward has also played for Blackpool, Stoke City, Bristol Rovers and Bury in his playing career.

The Newport posting is the Welshman’s first job in football management, but he does also have coaching experience with Cardiff City.

At 29, he was one of the youngest coaches to ever achieve the highest qualification badges in Europe as he earned his UEFA Pro License.

There was heartache and pride in equal measure for Latics, who twice battled back from behind at Newport, only to be denied what would have been a dramatic victory in the closing stages.

Mike Fondop came off the bench to score his first two Oldham goals, but just when it looked like he had secured maximum points, John Sheridan’s side saw victory snatched from their grasp in the cruellest of circumstances.

Against a dangerous Newport side currently occupying a place in the play-off places, the point for Latics was all the more impressive given that they had to play the final 20 minutes at a numerical disadvantage following the sending off of Dylan Bahamboula for a lunge on Matt Dolan.

Davis Keillor-Dunn had drawn Latics level in the first half before Fondop struck twice after replacing the injured Junior Luamba late in the first half as the visitors displayed tremendous character on an action-packed afternoon in South Wales.

Even a fine goal from Keillor-Dunn could not prevent Latics from going in behind at the break, the visitors having been subjected to periods of heavy pressure during the first half.

Newport began with gusto and they took the lead on 14 minutes, a left-wing cross from Ryan Haynes going straight in after the ball had been worked out wide by the hosts.

Danny Rogers got down well to save from Scot Bennett, while dangerman Dom Telford found space in the area before lifting his effort over.

Yet after the initial pressure, Latics responded well and the equaliser on 28 minutes was a thing of beauty. Having taken an exquisite pass from Bahamboula in his stride, Keillor-Dunn veered in from the right before sending a low, angled finish past the reach of Nick Townsend.

The hosts continued to present a threat, Rogers producing a parrying save from Dolan before Azaz shot wide from the edge of the box.

Newport’s biggest threat came from Telford and having earlier been denied by Rogers, he underlined his status as one of the more dangerous strikers in Sky Bet League Two by restoring the hosts’ lead five minutes before the interval from just inside the area.

But there has been renewed character about Latics in recent weeks and having started the second half with intent, they battled back again.

Jordan Clarke flashed a shot over while Bahambula was denied by Townsend. From the resulting corner, Adams’ pin-point delivery was met by a bullet header from Fondop, powering the ball home past Townsend.

At that stage, the visitors were in the ascendancy, but in keeping with a tumultuous encounter, Newport then came on strong. Latics’ cause appeared to have been dealt a hammer blow when Bahamboula was shown a straight red card, but Sheridan’s side were undeterred.

With seven minutes to go, Fondop put Latics ahead, showing great instincts to convert Sam Hart’s cross from the left.

Latics would have been good value for the victory and although Mickey Demetriou equalised in the final minute, the visitors still left with an over-riding sense of pride.

Ticket and travel information for the away fixture at Rodney Parade against Newport County (Saturday 12 February - 3pm KO).

Tickets for the Sky Bet League Two match will go straight to general sale on Thursday 27 January at 10am. Tickets will then go off sale slightly earlier on Thursday 10 February at 3pm due to staff travelling down the day before to return unsold tickets.

The club has received an initial allocation of 300 tickets with a further 731 available if needed. Just over 200 have been sold as of Thursday 10 February (10am).

Supporters who don't collect their match tickets from Boundary Park when ordered can get them from Newport's ticket office booth.

Restrictions

Due to current Welsh Government rules, please note all supporters attending must be able to produce one of the following upon arrival to the ground as part of protocols:

A digital NHS COVID pass.
A paper NHS COVID pass.
Proof of a recent negative Lateral Flow Test.
