Carlisle United vs. Latics

Sky Bet League Two - Matchday 14

22 October 2021

Latics travel to Brunton Park for another crucial Sky Bet League Two fixture on Saturday (3pm KO).

Keith Curle will be heading back to his former employers in hunt of a much needed three points.

Last time out, Latics failed to build on a 3-0 win over Stevenage and fell to a 3-1 defeat against Walsall at Boundary Park.

Form Guide

The Cumbrians are winless in their previous seven Sky Bet League Two games, with four of those games in the run ending in defeat.

Last time out, United managed to salvage a point against the ten men of Newport County, with Zach Clough scoring the equaliser in the 67th minute.

Carlisle have struggled so far this season and find themselves 23rd in the division, level on points with Latics but behind on goal difference.

In other competitions, the Cumbrians were dumped out of the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle following defeat to Sheffield United but they have enjoyed more success in the EFL Trophy where they can boast five points from their opening two games.

Following a draw with fellow League Two outfit Hartlepool United, they kept their nerve on penalties to claim the bonus point before defeating Everton’s under 21 side 2-0.

The Cumbrians’ Last Six

  1. Newport County 2-2 Carlisle United
  2. Carlisle United 0-1 Tranmere Rovers
  3. Bristol Rovers 3-0 Carlisle United
  4. Carlisle United 0-2 Forest Green Rovers
  5. Carlisle United 2-0 Everton Under 21s (EFL Trophy)
  6. Sutton United 4-0 Carlisle United

Latics picked up four of the possible six points against Carlisle last term.

The last time that the clubs met was at Brunton Park. Oldham found themselves a goal down at the break courtesy of Josh Kayode.

A spirited second-half come back with goals from Marcel Hilssner, Dylan Bahamboula and Carl Piergianni made sure that Latics claimed all three points with a 3-1 win.

At Boundary Park in October, Latics rescued a point through a Zak Dearnley goal in the 80th minute following a goal scored by Aaron Hayden for the visitors.

Latics are unbeaten in their previous four games against their opposition.

Watch Out For

Highly-rated forward Zach Clough made the move to Brunton Park this summer.

Zach Clough.jpeg

Clough was on target for the Cumbrians last time out, scoring the equaliser in their 2-2 draw with Welsh side Newport County.

The 26-year-old began his career with Bolton Wanderers after he came through the club’s academy.

He made an immediate impact when making his debut just 19 years of age as he scored the winning goal against North West rivals Wigan Athletic.

In 2017, Clough’s promise earned him a big money move to Nottingham Forest but he was eventually loaned back to his first club Bolton.

He also had a loan spell at Rochdale before moving to Wigan and then eventually his current club Carlisle.

In The Dugout

Gavin Skelton is the man in the dugout for the hosts.

Gavin Skelton.jpg

Current caretaker boss, Skelton has been in temporary charge at Brunton Park since the club parted ways with Chris Beech earlier this month.

This is the 40-year-old’s second temporary spell at Brunton Park and his other managerial roles include time at Workington and Queen of the South.

Carlisle United is one of the many clubs that Skelton represented as a player.

Match Reports

Carlisle 0-0 Latics

23 October 2021

Latics will probably reflect on two points dropped as they went close several times but were unable to find a way to goal against Carlisle.

Davis Keillor-Dunn was denied by the angle of post and bar in the first half before seeing an audacious shot from the centre circle touched wide on an afternoon that saw Keith Curle’s side create the clearer openings.

Although the hosts also had chances during an open game,  the lack of guile from either side betrayed their respective positions near the foot of the Sky Bet League Two table.

Curle made three changes in personnel from the midweek defeat against Walsall with returns for Carl Piergianni and Hallam Hope, while Harry Vaughan was handed his second league start as the Head Coach also opted for a change of shape.

Despite their limited influence in the attacking third for much of a fractured first half, Latics left the field at the interval after two near misses.

Two minutes before the break, Keillor-Dunn found space just outside the Carlisle area and executed a superb curling effort which flew beyond the reach of goalkeeper Mark Howard, only for the ball to crash against the woodwork.

The rebound fell to Jamie Bowden, who was flagged offside as he rolled home the follow-up, but replays suggested the midfielder was behind the ball when Keillor-Dunn struck his initial effort.

Minutes later, Hope was played in at the far post as Latics pressed again, only for Howard to repel the former Carlisle striker, who was deployed on the right as Curle altered his formation.

Until then, the better moments had belonged to the hosts, Harrison McGahey called upon to make a crucial block from Brennan Dickenson’s first-time effort after a right-wing cross from Joe Riley.

Jayson Luetwiler also did well to turn aside an arching free-kick from Zach Clough, while Lewis Alessandra and Jordan Gibson also placed efforts off target.

Latics broke well midway through the half, Callum Whelan spotting the run of Harry Vaughan with a find pass from midfield, only for the youngster to fire the ball over.

If Keillor-Dunn’s first-half effort was special then his moment of improvisation in the second was almost something truly extraordinary.

Just after the hour, he received the ball inside the centre circle before sending a lofted shot towards goal as he spotted Howard off his line, only for the goalkeeper to recover and touch the ball aside.

Latics were responsible for periods of good pressure throughout the second period but were unable to find the cutting edge.

Bahamboula and Piergianni were unable to make the most of opportunities inside the box, the former also receiving a pass later in the half from Whelan after a surging counter-attack from the visitors saw them break three-on-three, but the Congo international placed his shot into the arms of Howard.

Whelan also went close, while Keillor-Dunn sent another curling effort just wide and although Carlisle applied late pressure of their own, it was Latics who will feel they deserved a greater reward.
