Mansfield Town vs. Latics

Sky Bet League Two - Matchday 11

8 October 2021

© Eddie Garvey

Keith Curle's men travel to Nottinghamshire to face Mansfield Town in a vital Sky Bet League Two clash this weekend (3pm KO).

Last time out, Latics suffered a defeat on home turf as Harrogate Town proved their quality.

Jack Diamond put the Sulphurites ahead in the first-half with a tap-in from close range before the prolific Luke Armstrong added a second goal later on.

In positive news, Harry Vaughan notched his first professional goal with a sweetly-struck low effort from the edge of the box, but his side couldn't mount a comeback.

Form Guide

Nigel Clough has endured a tough start to the campaign as his side sit 22nd, a place above Oldham.

They're winless in their last ten matches in all competitions with their latest defeat falling at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday in the Papa John's Trophy on Tuesday evening.

The Stags faithful last witnessed their team win in August 2021 against Newport County with George Maris and Ollie Clarke getting themselves on the scoresheet.

The Stags' Last Six:

  1. Mansfield Town 1-2 Sheffield Wednesday (Papa John's Trophy)
  2. Mansfield Town 0-1 Barrow
  3. Leyton Orient 0-0 Mansfield Town
  4. Mansfield Town 0-0 Rochdale
  5. Walsall 3-1 Mansfield Town
  6. Mansfield Town 1-3 Harrogate Town

Head-to-Head

Won - 29, Drawn - 17, Lost - 19

For - 111,  Against - 94

The last five fixtures between the two clubs has seen 26 goals scored (10 for Oldham and 16 for Mansfield).

Watch Out For

George Maris will be the key man for the Stags.

George Maris.jpg

Born in Sheffield, the attack-minded midfielder spent time at Barnsley and enjoyed loan spells at Nuneaton Town, Guiseley and Lincoln City.

Maris kickstarted his career whilst applying his trade at Cambridge United and became one of the brightest talents in division.

The 25-year-old managed to make 150 appearances for United, notching 22 goals in the process. Maris, who has an abundance of vision, has the ability to produce the final pass to unlock a backline, so Latics must be wary of him.

Interestingly, Maris scored a stunning strike against Latics as we picked up a 3-1 win over Cambridge in November 2018.

Clough, son of the legendary Brian Clough, has an impressive CV including both his playing and management career.

The 55-year-old made over 300 appearances for Nottingham Forest and, during his time at the Reds, represented England on 14 occassions. Following that, he wore the colours of Liverpool, Manchester City, Sheffield Wednesday and Burton Albion.

His managerial career began at Burton Albion as he won five promotions as well as many other trophies. Additionally, Clough has been in the hot seat at Derby County, Sheffield United, another spell at Burton and Mansfield Town.

Mansfield Town 0-0 Latics

Latics were unable to find a way through as they played out a goalless draw to earn a point at Mansfield.

In a game that saw chances at both ends, neither side could muster a cutting edge, although Keith Curle’s side will reflect on a number of good opportunities to have claimed maximum points.

Having created a host of chances at the end of the first half before also starting well after the break, Latics certainly had their moments, although goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler was also needed to make two important saves as the game went on.

A third clean sheet in four Sky Bet League Two outings was reward for a solid defensive showing from the visitors as they search for greater consistency in results.

Curle made three changes from the previous weekend against Harrogate, Zak Dearnley leading the forward line on his first league start of the season, while Benny Couto returned from illness and Jmaie Bowden started in midfield.

The first period was punctured by a 12-minute stoppage due to an injury sustained by Mansfield midfielder George Maris following a clash of heads with his team-mate, James Clarke.

The home side had started with intent, Danny Johnson sending a shot wide after a run down the left from Stephen McLaughlin, who also drilled a free-kick wide.

Mansfield appeared to be gaining a foothold when Maris was forced off on a stretcher and although his replacement, Rhys Oates, later dragged an effort wide, Latics grew into the half as it progressed.

By the time the interval approached, the visitors had created enough chances to have warranted a lead.

Harrison McGahey came within inches as he smashed an effort onto the crossbar after Carl Piergianni got his head to a corner from Jamie Bowden at the far post.

And further chances followed in the extended period of added time with Couto central to everything Latics did well.

He cut the ball back for Dylan Bahamboula to shoot over, before his long throw-in reached Piergianni, who brought a good stop from goalkeeper Nathan Bishop.

18-year-old Couto then released a superb pass to spot the run of Dearnley. He raced into the box, only to be denied by Bishop and Davis Keillor-Dunn was unable to adjust himself to make the most of the rebound.

The visitors also started well after the break with another chance for Keillor-Dunn, while Dearnley linked well with Jamie Bowden and Bahamboula showed great footwork to enter the area as Latics produced some promising approach work without capitalising.

Latics had Leutwiler to thank with a good low stop from George Lapslie and the goalkeeper got down low again with nine minutes to play, producing s sharp save to turn away Harry Charsley’s drive.

The visitors were not as effective as the second half progressed but kept a good shape and dug deep when needed to ensure they left with a point.
