Latics vs. Dorking Wanderers

12 August 2022

Latics are looking to back up the solid point that they picked up down South at Torquay as they welcome Dorking Wanderers to Boundary Park.

It is set to be quite the event at Boundary Park as it is the first competitive game of the new era for Oldham.

The game also sees the visitors play just their second National league game of their history, their first away from home.

The opposition

Dorking gained an impressive point in their National league debut against a Chesterfield side that will be looking to be amongst the runners and riders for promotion this term.

A second placed finish in National League South for Wanderers earned them a place in the playoffs last season and wins over Oxford City and Ebbsfleet saw them achieve promotion to the fifth tier.

This brought an incredible 12th promotion in their 23 years of existence as a club, continuing their meteoric rise.

The opening day 2-2 draw for Dorking leaves them in 11th place after day one, ahead of Latics on goals scored.

In pre-season, Dorking turned out five times where they beat Roffey, Farnborough and Barry whilst losing against Leatherfield and Sutton.

Head-to-Head

This will be the first time that Latics have played against Dorking Wanderers in a competitive fixture.

Watch out for

James McShane was the man who scored Dorking Wanderers’ first ever goal at this level in the 2-2 draw with Chesterfield.

One of Dorking’s longest servants having been with the club for six seasons now and the Royal Mail delivery office worker will be hoping to add to his tally on Saturday.

The left sided midfielder was a big part of Dorking’s promotion season last term, netting 14 times along the way, including one in their successful playoff journey.

In the dugout

Marc White is the man in the visitors’ dugout.

One of the most intriguing things about Latics’ opponents is White’s unique journey with the club.

It was actually White who founded the club back in 1999 with a bunch of friends but not even he could have guessed the journey that they would go on since.

12 promotions since forming is far from his original ambitions: “The original intention was to have a kickabout and enjoy a beer after the game.” He told the BBC. White, 49, is owner, chairman and manager of Dorking Wanderers.
