Match Reports

Latics 2-2 Gateshead

14 February 2023

Latics were dealt a sickening blow in the final ten minutes, as Gateshead scored two late goals to rescue a point at Boundary Park.

John Rooney put Latics ahead as he tapped home Will Sutton’s headed pass at the back post.

Ten minutes later, Alex Reid was given the ball by Nathan Sheron and fired home past Marschall to give Latics a two-goal cushion.

Two quick goals from Gateshead in the last 10 minutes gave Latics too little time to find a third, leaving Unsworth's side to settle for a point.

Latics started the game brightly, Sutton’s cross scared Marschall, and Joe Nuttall headed an effort just wide of the post.

Reid was found with a great ball, hitting it first time, but failed to aim it away from the ‘keeper.

Tollitt produced one of his trademark cut-ins, but his shot flew over the bar.

Coming out in the second-half, Latics looked a lot brighter than the later ends of the first-half.

Mark Kitching produced a brilliant cross, which found Sutton at the far post. The youngster headed the ball across the face of goal and found Rooney who slotted home.

Oldham quickly made it two, Sheron nabbed the ball off Gateshead, found Reid in the box, who made easy work of slotting it past the goalkeeper, to score his first goal in a Latics shirt.

Timmy Abraham came on in place of Reid, after a great shift, with 15 minutes left on the clock.

Tollitt looked to find a third when he drilled a ball across the box, but the ‘keeper caught it.

Gateshead scored a flukey goal in the 83rd minute, Kamil Conteh’s shot snuck through the flurry of bodies and into the far corner.

It was a suckerpunch for Latics, Kenton Richardson managed to bundle the ball over the line after a series of deflections and mistakes.

Oldham: Norman, Hogan, Gardner, Sheron, Rooney, Tollitt (Chapman 84), Reid (Abraham 74), Kitching, Sutton, Yarney, Nuttall.

Subs not used: Hudson, Couto, P. Clarke

Attendance: 5845 (76)
