Dorking Wanderers vs. Latics

7 January 2023

© Eddie Garvey

Latics are looking to build on the positive result achieved last time out with a trip south to take on Dorking Wanderers.

A battling performance on New Year’s Day saw David Unsworth’s men twice come from behind to take a point against the league leaders Notts County.

Nathan Sheron was on the scoresheet whilst Joe Nutall got his second goal in as many games to level the scoring from the penalty spot.

The opposition

This is Dorking’s maiden season in the National League, and they have made a good account of themselves.

A second-place finish in National League South for Wanderers earned them a place in the playoffs last season and wins over Oxford City and Ebbsfleet saw them achieve promotion to the fifth tier.

This brought an incredible 12th promotion in their 23 years of existence as a club, continuing their meteoric rise.

Latics know it will be a tricky place to go with Dorking experiencing a good home record which includes an impressive win over Notts County.

Form guide

Wanderers have won one of their last six outings in the National League.

The festive fixtures saw them take one point on boxing day against Eastleigh but in the reverse fixture they fared significantly worse, losing 4-0.

They are still in the FA Trophy, courtesy of a shootout success against divisional rivals Yeovil Town.

In their first season in the fifth tier, they find themselves in a respectable 15th place, nine points above the bottom four.

Wanderers’ last six

Eastleigh 4-0 Dorking

Dorking 1-1 Eastleigh

Yeovil Town 0-0 Dorking (FA Trophy, Dorking won on pens)

Dorking 3-2 Maidstone

Chesterfield 3-1 Dorking

FC Halifax 3-1 Dorking

Head-to-Head

When the two sides met at Boundary Park in the second game of the season it represented the start of a new era for Latics.

Goals from Hallam Hope, Chris Porter and Ben Tollitt gave the hosts a comfortable 3-0 lead but two late goals from Dorking made it a nervy finish in front of the BT Sport cameras.

Watch out for

James McShane has 15 league goals to his name already this season.

One of Dorking’s longest servants having been with the club for six seasons now and the Royal Mail delivery office worker will be hoping to add to his tally when Dorking welcome Latics to the Meadowbank ground.

McShane was last on target for his side in the 3-2 win over Maidstone.

He was impressive in the promotion season last term but has already outdone his goal tally, showing that he is more than capable of making the step up.

21. Marc White.jpeg

In the dugout

Marc White is the man in the home side's dugout.

One of the most intriguing things about Latics’ opponents is White’s unique journey with the club.

It was White who founded the club back in 1999 with a group of friends but not even he could have guessed the journey that they would go on since.

Odds

The bookies are clearly predicting this one to be a tight game, but Sky Bet have the hosts as slight favourites at 7/5.

Unsworth’s men are 6/4 whilst the draw is 5/2.

Match officials

The referee is Farai Hallam, and he’ll be assisted by James Hurst and Steven Scott, with Stephen Hawkins occupying the role of fourth official.
