Altrincham vs. Latics

25 October 2022

Latics are looking to make it back-to-back league wins as they make the short journey to Altrincham for the midweek fixture.

David Unsworth oversaw his first win as Oldham boss at the weekend with Oldham beating Yeovil Town 2-0.

Oscar Threlkeld and Mike Fondop provided the goals on a day that will hopefully fill Latics with momentum going forward.

The opposition

Altrincham FC are currently in their third season at this level following their playoff success in the National League North in the 2019/20 season.

Since returning to the fifth tier, they have finished in respectable 17th and 14th places.

They were relegated from this level in the 2015/16 season and suffered back to back relegations, meaning they had to play in the Northern Premier League.

They were only at that level for one term as they bounced straight back up courtesy of winning the title.

Form guide

Altrincham come into this game on the back of a solid run of form in the National League.

They have won three of their previous five league outings. This would have been of been four had it not been for a dramatic 97th minute equaliser for Torquay United in their last game.

They did however suffer an early exit in the FA Cup with Gateshead knocking them out after a replay in the North East.

They go into the game in 17th, one place and one point worse off than Latics.

The Robins’ last six

Torquay United 4-4 Altrincham

Gateshead 2-1 Altrincham (FA Cup fourth qualification round replay)

Altrincham 2-2 Gateshead (FA Cup fourth qualification round)

Altrincham 4-1 Dorking Wanderers

Gateshead 1-3 Altrincham

Notts County 3-1 Altrincham

Watch out for

Versatile forward Marcus Dinanga has four league goals to his name so far this season.

The 25-year-old has been with Alty since 2021 but hasn’t always enjoyed the most success and has been loaned out.

He showcased his class in the back end of last season with this loan move to National League South side Dartford.

With a very impressive 13 goals in 15 games, the forward showed that he does have what it takes to be a prolific centre forward and he will be hoping to take some of that form into this season at a higher level.

And he has definitely shown that he has what it takes of late with all four of his goals this season coming in his last four outings.

He will be looking to maintain his rich vein of form when Latics make the journey to Moss Lane.

In the dugout

Phil Parkinson is the man in the dugout for the hosts.

He was appointed with the club having just been relegated from the National League North and he has since led them to two promotions and back up to the National League.

His previous club was Nantwich Town, who he was able to transform from a club threatened by relegation to a side that challenged for promotion.

Odds

Sky Bet have Altrincham as favourites to maintain their recent good run of form and are priced at 17/20.

Latics are 13/5 to make it back to back wins and the draw is 5/2.

Chris Conn-Clarke scored the only goal as Latics suffered defeat at Moss Lane.

The Altrincham midfielder found the top left-hand corner with a fine strike from distance on 72 minutes to complete a hugely disappointing evening for the visitors.

Latics went close to an equaliser in the closing stages when Jordan Clarke’s header cannoned off the crossbar but there was to be no way back.

Manager David Unsworth made one change from the team that started the win against Yeovil, Benny Couto replacing the injured Dan Gardner.

Latics attempted to start on the front foot but despite creating a number of openings they were unable to find a way through.

After advancing down the left wing, Couto cut in from the flank before seeing his shot parried by goalkeeper Ollie Byrne before Ben Tollitt lifted an effort over the bar after further pressure from Unsworth’s side.

Good approach work from Latics then saw Oscar Threlkeld combine with Mike Fondop and Clarke, whose cross was fumbled by Byrne, earning Latics a corner.

As the half progressed, Altrincham began to play their way into the game, Magnus Norman holding an effort from Eddy Jones after the full-back broke down the left before cutting inside.

Jordan Hulme was inches away from connecting with a dangerous cross from Conn-Clarke and the Alty striker then shot over after cutting in from out wide.

The visitors tried to apply pressure late in the half, Tollitt releasing Fondop, whose shot was charged down by Ross Burrows before Threlkeld sent an effort wide.

Alty started the second period with intent, Josh Lundstram seeing his shot from distance blocked before Hulme’s effort from the loose ball went over.

Fondop did well to turn inside the Alty area before his shot was held by Byrne, but that moment aside there was little for the visiting fans to cheer.

John Rooney blocked a shot from Ryan Colclough before Conn-Clarke struck from distance in style.

Latics attempted a late rally but the closest they came was when Clarke directed a Zaine Francis-Angol cross onto the crossbar with a header.

A subsequent clash of heads meant Clarke joined Threlkeld in being unable to complete the game and unfortunately for Latics there was to be no way back.
