Woking vs. Latics

13 September 2022

After an enforced break at the weekend, Latics are back in National League action tonight with a long journey south to take on Woking.

Oldham came unstuck last time out against the early front runners in Chesterfield and will be looking to bounce back from the 2-0 defeat.

The opposition

This season marks Woking’s fourth season back in the fifth tier of English football after losing their National League status for a season.

They have fluctuated between the divisions in their recent history, becoming established members of the top level of non-league football with a 17-year stint which came to an end with relegation in 2009.

The Cards spent three seasons at the lower level before returning as champions, spending another six years in the National League before returning through the play-offs in 2019.

Form Guide

After seven league games, Woking sit in a healthy tenth position, three points off the National League play-offs.

They drew their last game away at Wealdstone, which came on the back of a 3-1 win at Torquay, James Daly among the goals as he scored twice.

The Cards have won two of their three home games so far, registering 2-0 successes over Dagenham and Scunthorpe before losing by the odd goal in five against Wrexham in their last game at Kingfield.

Watch out for

Striker James Daly comes into this fixture on a fine run of form.

With three goals to his name so far this campaign, John Sheridan’s men will have to be on their game to keep the forward quiet.

Daly is a summer acquisition for the Cards, joining from Stevenage, where he made 19 appearances last season.

He has also played in League One for Bristol Rovers, signing for the Gas after starting out with Crystal Palace before a loan at Kingstonian.

In the dugout

Darren Sarll is the man in the dugout for the hosts.

The 39-year-old has been in charge at Woking since March, after the best part of three years in the National League with Yeovil.

After a playing career which saw him represent a number of non-league clubs including Bedford Town, Dunstable and Hemel Hempstead, he took his first steps as a coach in the youth and reserve set-up at Stevenage.

He also occupied youth roles at Brentford, Stevenage and Rotherham, before returning to Broadhall Way as part of the first-team set-up and then joining Watford.

He took his first steps into full management at Yeovil in June 2019.

Odds

With a good record at home, Woking come into this game as favourites at 10/11.

Latics are out at 13/5 whilst the draw is 12/5.

Match coverage and information

Live audio commentary is available on Latics Player, guiding you through the match.

For more information, visit the Latics Player page by clicking here.

As detailed in our media update at the start of the season, the club has had to make several adjustments to how we cover games as a result of relegation to the National League.

Whereas in the EFL it is a necessary for all clubs to provide ISDN facilities, there is no such requirement in the National League. As a result, commentary from away games such as this will have to be provided by different means.

No ISDN facilities are available at tonight's game, and whilst the media team has worked on alternative ways of providing commentary during the summer, broadcasting from new grounds sometimes brings its own challenges. Commentary will be available tonight but we would like to thank supporters for bearing with us with any difficulties that may arise while we continue to adjust to life in the new division.

Alternatively, supporters can also follow the game with live updates on the club's official Twitter account: @OfficialOAFC

As always, we will endeavour to ensure confirmation of the line-up is published as soon as possible on social media.

However, supporters should note that team sheets in the National League are not exchanged until an hour before kick-off. This is 15 minutes later than in the EFL and as a result, the line-up is likely to be published slightly later than in previous seasons.

Match Reports

Woking 3-0 Latics

13 September 2022

A manic eight minutes in the first half of a miserable night at Kingfield Stadium left Latics still searching for their first win on the road this season.

John Sheridan made three changes to the side that lost last time out against Chesterfield. In came Harrison McEahy, Charlie Cooper and Jack Stobbs, making way for Jordan Clarke, Hallam Hope and Dan Gardner, who didn’t travel South due to injury from a knock he picked up in the defeat eleven days ago.

Following an impeccably observed minute’s silence in memory of Queen Elizabeth II, Latics started the match brightly. Charlie Wellens, son of former Oldham boss Richie, played in a more advanced role and he linked up well with Mike Fondop in the early stages of the game.

It was the Man United loanee’s through ball that put Fondop in on goal, but his effort from just inside the box rattled the crossbar in the 11th minute. The striker repaid the earlier favour with a ball through to Wellens moments later, but his effort went just wide.

The early Oldham chances soon felt wasted when the breakthrough for the home side came in the 19th minute. A ball down Latics’ left-hand side was brought under control by Padraig Amond inside the box, who cleverly cut it back to the oncoming Tyreke Johnson, slotting it past Magnus Norman for his first goal of the season.

The home crowd found their voice and a Woking onslaught followed. Amond and Johnson combined again, causing issues for Sheridan’s defence, but the striker couldn’t bend his shot past the Oldham keeper.

The home-side stepped up their tempo and started to turn the screw, no sooner had Latics got the ball up the pitch was it back in their half. This time a long ball forward bounced favourably for Amond, who timed his run well to break into the area and force another save from Norman 12 yards out.

The resulting corner called the Oldham keeper into action again, pushing Jim Kellermann’s near-post effort around the post. Woking switched it up for their next corner, Josh Casey whipped it to the back-post, finding the head of a towering Luke Wilkinson, who nodded the ball down to double their lead 27 minutes in.

The promising early start from Sheridan’s side was well washed out as the minutes ticked down to half time, and with Woking seeing most of the ball, the visitors were forced to battle and chase to regain a foothold, but the chances were few and far between.

The second half started with a change for Latics, Oscar Threlkeld made way for Joe McGlynn, who’s signing on loan from Championship club Burnley was confirmed last week.

Almost instantly, his presence gave Oldham another gear and four minutes after the restart, McGlynn broke deep into the Woking half with a burst of pace, but he couldn’t quite connect with his shot which went wide of the left post.

Any early second half optimism was soon distinguished in the 54th minute when a well worked Woking ball down Latics’ left side was flashed into the box for the oncoming Johnson to hammer home at the back post, putting his team three up and doubling the strikers’ goal tally for the evening and season.

As the second half went on, there wasn’t much for the 250 travelling Latics fans to cheer. Fondop put the ball in the back of the net in the 76th minute, but it was ruled out for offside, summing up the evening.
