Barnet 1-4 Latics

22 November 2023

Latics ran out victors at The Hive, with three second-half goals proving vital.

Norwood gave Latics the lead, perhaps a tad against the run of play, from the penalty spot, before Barnet equalised, also from the spot.

But Fondop soon changed that, firing home a powerful effort from a tight angle to give Latics the lead again, before Norwood and Hope bagged late on to secure the points.

It would be fair to say that Barnet had the best of the early chances, most of which came through Kanu who caused Latics problems all evening.

The first penalty of the night came when Fondop chased down a long ball, took the ball past the ‘keeper, who had no other option than to bring Mikey down, who was through on an empty net.

Despite Mikey’s appeals to take the spot kick, designated penalty taker, James Norwood, stepped up, and fired it home with ease.

Kabamba thought he’d pulled the game level for the hosts, when he shot home from close range, but the linesman’s flag was up for a clear offside.

Latics had more defending to do just before the break, Hooper’s strong shot was kept out by a multitude of Latics bodies on the line.

Dan Gardner, a star player on Saturday, found the run of Norwood with his wide free-kick, the striker made contact, but his header was caught by Walker.

Barnet would equalise, and like Latics’ opener, it came from the spot.

Tricky winger Kanu was brought down in the box, and Pritchard stepped up, slotting home.

Micky Mellon’s side weren’t hard done though, and just a few moments later Fondop equalised, in similar fashion to how he did at The Hive last season.

Norwood slipped in through, before he gracefully found the top corner with a powerful strike.

Confidence was running through Mikey;s veins, probably leading to his attempt to lob Walker on the half-volley from outside the box, but Walker saved.

The third goal all came from Sheron’s ball, just outside his own box. It went over the top for Norwood, who shrugged off his defender, ran through one-on-one with the ‘keeper, before rounding him and tapping into the empty net.

The last 20 minutes or so were all Latics, and they really could have had two or three more, but they had to settle for one.
Norwood selflessly gave the ball to Hope, who was making a run into the box, even though he was in a good shooting position.

Hallam controlled the ball well, and beat the ‘keeper with ease, to cap off a brilliant night for Latics, and the 234 away fans in attendance.

Oldham: Hudson, Kitching, Lundstram, Fondop, Sheron, Green, Raglan, McGahey, Gardner (Hope, 79’), Freeman (Hogan, 62’), Norwood (Willoughby, 90+1’).

Subs not used: Norman, Ward.

Attendance: 1,799 (234)
