Woking 0-1 Latics

18 November 2023

Oldham got back to winning ways with a 1-0 win away at Woking.

It was a mixed opening 15 minutes, with both sides creating half chances, but nothing of note.

Latics really got a hold of the game towards the end of the first-half, with a number of good chances being created.

Oldham kept at it in the second half, and were rewarded when Norwood tucked home Green’s great pass.

Micky’s side never really seemed in danger, and kept Woking out to secure all three points.

Latics had the first chance of the game, after winning a free-kick outside the box, they attempted a move from the training ground, laying it off to Kitching, whose shot went wide.

Oldham were perhaps a tad lucky not to concede when Dennon Lewis worked his way into the box, getting a good shot away which was palmed wide by Hudson.

Ward combined well with Norwood on the edge of the area, playing a one-two to move into a good shooting position, with his effort being saved.

It was during the last 10 to 15 minutes of the first-half that Oldham really came into their own, they passed the ball around really well, finding pockets of space and not being fazed by a challenge of pressure.

That allowed for a host of good chances, including one where Norwood was unlucky not to poke home Ward’s cross, and another where Fondop scuffed his shot.

Latics’ first opportunity of the second-half came via an unlikely source. Charlie Raglan took receipt of the ball, hitting it on the volley with the outside of his boot, very nearly catching the ‘keeper out from 25 yards.

Mellon made his first, and only change of the game, bringing on Devarn Green for Dan Ward, and it had an instant impact.

After just three minutes on the pitch, Latics won a corner which was half-cleared. The ball fell to Devarn, who dinked it forward, Norwood controlled it, and fired it home with deadly accuracy from a handful of yards out.

Moments after the restart, Dan Gardner nearly made it two, when his thunderous effort came off the underside of the crossbar. Mikey attempted to bundle home the rebound, throwing himself at the ball, but couldn’t get to it.

Woking threw everything at Oldham in the closing minutes - apart from their goalkeeper - who was refused permission to enter the attacking box at a number of late corners and free-kicks.

One of those free-kicks saw Hudson clattered as it was swung in, and thankfully, Latics were awarded a free-kick.

Oldham: Hudson, Kitching, Lundstram, Fondop, Ward, Sheron, Raglan, McGahey, Gardner, Freeman, Norwood.

Subs not used: Norman, Shelton, Willoughby, Sutton.
