Latics 2-0 York

19 September 2023

Steve Thompson won his first game in interim charge of Latics, with a convincing 2-0 victory over York City.

Latics entered this game having now won a game in over a month, whilst the visitors were in a good mood following their 3-0 demolition of Southend on Saturday.

It didn’t take long for Oldham to make the breakthrough, Nuttall was picked out by Green’s cross, he turned and found the far corner with a beautiful shot.

Athletic looked for a second for the rest of the first-half, and were disappointed not to, but went into the break ahead.

The second period wasn’t unlike the first, and substitute Reid doubled our lead, he held off the defender, got on the other side of him as the ball bounced over his head, and struck the ball well on the half-volley, giving the ‘keeper no chance.

Latics started the game with attacking intent and intensity, and it didn’t take long for them to get their rewards, Nuttall turned inside the box after receiving Green’s cross, placing a great shot into the far corner.

Green looked to extend Oldham’s lead with a beautiful drilled cross, but it was claimed by Whitley.

Oldham did have defending to do though, York were happy to play a bit of possession football, and that led to a great chance of an opportunity.

Following a nice passing move, the York winger was sent through, but Kitching read the move well, and managed to block the promising cross.

Just before the interval, Sheron and Dickenson headed the ball between each other a handful of times, before Brennan attempted to run onto Sheron’s pass, was dragged down, but nothing was given.

Coming out of the break a goal up, there were claims for a penalty when Gardner’s volley appeared to strike a York arm in the box, but play was waved on.

Dickenson looked to continue his goal-scoring antics of recent weeks, his run matched the path of the pass, his shot beat the goalkeeper, but he was denied by the post.

Reid came on in place of the tiring Willoughby, who made a good account of himself, despite not getting on the scoresheet.

It didn’t take long for Alex to get his goal, anticipating the trajectory of the ball, he held off the defender until the ball had passed over his head, before turning and hitting the ball sweetly, beating the man between the sticks with ease.

Oldham: Hudson, Kitching, Hogan, Hobson, Willoughby (Reid, 68), Nuttall, Sheron, Green, Gardner, Sutton, Dickenson (Hope, 77).

Subs not used: Norman, Shelton, Fondop.
