Youth Team Defeated By Late Chesterfield Comeback

30 October 2017

Oldham Athletic’s Youth Team were defeated on Saturday by Chesterfield U18s who scored two goals in the last ten minutes of the match to make it 3-2.

Pete Wild, lead youth development phase coach and Craig Large, lead foundation phase coach, took the Youth Team whilst Tony Philliskirk was assisting Richie Wellens and the first team on Saturday.

On the match, Wild said: “It was certainly disappointing especially because of how hard we worked in the first half in tough conditions on a tough pitch.

“I felt we dealt with them well first half and deservedly scored through Max Norman just before half time.

“The lads had worked really hard to get themselves in front and dealt with everything that was thrown at them so to go in at half time one up I was really happy.

“We spoke about them playing the conditions and keeping things tight but five minutes into the second half we conceded a very dubious free kick a yard outside the box which they converted.

“That gave Chesterfield a bit of impetus that they didn’t have before, so for 15 minutes they got their tails up and had a go at us.

“We withstood that and got ourselves back in front through a lovely cross from Ned Dry and a great headed finish from Max Norman and we thought we were on top again.

“Unfortunately, with 10 minutes left they wriggled our centre half in the box and scored at the near post.

“Five minutes later off a set piece our defender hasn’t followed his man and they’ve headed the ball in from six yards.

“We lacked a little bit of concentration at a tough point in the game but ultimately in the second half we stopped doing what we were good at and I think that was our downfall in the end.

“There’s certainly things to think about, we could and should have controlled the game better and hopefully the lads learn from that experience ahead of playing at SportsDirect.com Park on Wednesday night in the FA Youth Cup Round One.

“There are going to be moments in the game on Wednesday night that will need cool and calm heads and hopefully that experience on Saturday will help them with that.”

Oldham Athletic’s Youth Team take on Bury U18s at SportsDirect.com Park in Round One of the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday, November 2, 7:00pm kick off.
