M'Changama's lucky strike

Youssouf M'Changama had the distinction of scoring Latics' first npower League One goal of the season at home to Walsall.

The midfield man (pictured) had an element of good fortune, however, as his 36th minute shot appeared to be saved by keeper David Grof only for the ball to squirm out of his grasp and roll into the net.

Latics' best early chance fell to Jordan Slew who fired narrowly wide from outside the penalty area in the 13th minute after he intercepted a poor pass from left-back James Chambers.

This kick started Latics who not long after had another great opening as Robbie Simpson brought a fine save from Grof with a well struck free kick from 30 yards.

Former Latics' player Dean Holden conceded the free kick after clattering into Simpson from behind for which he was booked.

Walsall also had their moments as Will Grigg had two great chances for the visitors after 18 and 21 minutes only to shoot wide each time when well placed.

Latics had another decent opening when M'Changama got a touch to a cross from Cliff Byrne, but Grof came to the Saddlers' rescue blocking well with his legs.

The breakthrough came from M'Changama's 30-yard drive which Grof initially appeared to have saved.

Half-time: Latics 1, Walsall 0
